Tipping maitre d'

Re: Tipping maitre d'

so let me get this straight...

say the sum of the charges per person are $100, and you're having 50 guests....

your total bill is $5000... then 20% is added as a service charge (another $1000).

when you give out the tips, you give roughly $150 ($3x50) to the maitre d'....

but what about the rest of the staff and the bartender? That is another 15% of $5000 ($650), divided among them?

I'm so confused, and I must pack the tip envelopes this week

Please help!

I would figure the RH suggestion might be a little high since they are trying to help their employees. I would go with a little less then what they say.

Re: Tipping maitre d'

when people tell me how much i am supposed to tip i just ignore them.
I have worked in the service industry as a waitress, a hostess, and an entertainer.
I have also worked at catering halls.
As a waitress at a catering hall, i made above minimum wage. i rarely saw a tip. which was fine because tipping waitstaff is to make up for the fact that they get less than minimum wage, and are expected to pay taxes on assumed tips.
that did not apply to me. i have several friends who work in catering halls and they all make over minimum wage.

as a performer... i do not expect to get tipped. it's nice when it happens, but i'm there doing my job. which happens to be something i love. i get paid to do it, there is no reason to give me more money.

i do not understand tipping the maitre d that much either. I honestly do not understand why they get such a high tip, they get considerably higher than what the waitstaff sees.

Tips are supposed to be for work above and beyond the expected service. I hate that starbucks and dunkin donuts have tip jars. You're getting paid to make my coffee, you are getting paid well... why do i have to give you 1/3 the price of my coffee??

I know i dont HAVE to... but i feel like a lot of people try to guilt you into tipping.

Also, with dj's or bands or photographers... I am paying around $100 a head to give them a great meal. I think that's a pretty nice tip. the entertainment is only there for like 4 hours... It's not like they could eat before or after...

I don't care if they think I'm a cheap bride. After that night, they'll never see me again.

What aggrivates me is the fact that we spend sooooo much money just to have a wedding and then places TELL you that you have to tip their staff and tell you roughly how much! What if I think the maitre d is an a**?? And what the heck do they do to deserve that big of a tip? They're doing THEIR JOB that night, they get paid for that normally so why the need to tip so generously. UGH it drives me crazy!!!
Then again I dont want to look like a cheap & ungrateful bride so you know I'll just suck it up and smile while I hand them an evelope and say 'oh my god thank you so much we had such a great night please take this with our thanks' LOL

i also wonder what do they do to deserve such a huge tip?? the nerve! and you know what, who the hell cares if you look cheap and ungrateful! you'll never see them again!!

VERY well put! I am disgusted by the nerve they have to request all this money!
Like you siad it's their JOB! Theya re receiving a salary (and a pretty decent one at that!)
I am a teacher and I have X amount of children in my class, at the nd of the year do I expect a certain amount of money from each parent? NOOOO!

My RH has a free one year anniversary dinner...do you think they will remember if we don't give the best tip???

I waitress in a resturant & I dont make minimum wage from the resturant but the tips i get (thanks to my loving costomers) definately make up for it..... and I, just like the other girls I work with, remember if people were horrible tippers and we remember the ones that tip generously!!! ......however, I do agree that $3-$5 pp is a lot to tip one person so you should go on how you feel by the end of the night.

ok here's another question along these lines...what about your BM?? He's the one youre dealing with the whole process; NOT the matire d. Does he get a tip too??

It depends on how you feel and on your venue. For instance I do not have to deal with only one BM at my venue. I can talk to anyone i want to make arrangements. so i wouldnt even know WHO to tip in that case. b/c it certainly won't be the BM i booked with. He made me cry.
