What is an appropriate amount to tip your maitre d? Our reception hall told us it should be $2-3 for each guest you have. Is that an accurate way to figure it out?? I had never heard of that before.

Yes, they will usually give you a range per person for the maitre'd's tip.
My RH told us the norm was $3 - $5 per person.

That sounds about right. Doesn't it just piss you off that you have to tip one person that much money?

What aggrivates me is the fact that we spend sooooo much money just to have a wedding and then places TELL you that you have to tip their staff and tell you roughly how much! What if I think the maitre d is an a**?? And what the heck do they do to deserve that big of a tip? They're doing THEIR JOB that night, they get paid for that normally so why the need to tip so generously. UGH it drives me crazy!!! Then again I dont want to look like a cheap & ungrateful bride so you know I'll just suck it up and smile while I hand them an evelope and say 'oh my god thank you so much we had such a great night please take this with our thanks' LOL

$2 - $3 per person. The RH will always tell you more b/c they want you to give their buddy (the matre'd) more $...lol

My advice to all brides...I used to work at 2 catering halls....they told the bride and grooms that they were tipping for the maitre'd and waiters/waitresses..only problem is, the waiters and waitresses never saw any of it!!! So, be sure to ask who exactly gets the tip..maybe that'll help you figure out how much to leave.

Re: Tipping maitre d'
my hall charges me a matrie dee tip already and they told me the wait staff sees the service chagre the charge me ... but they also told me that he matire dee tip get split etween him and 3 other people so i will most likely gie him and extra 200 or so and maybe the waitstaff some tips ...i think tippingis ridiculous ... in m y opnion tip waht you can afford .... who cares what the 'normal' ..

Our Maitre D actually had a flat fee which for our wedding came to 2.50 a person. We gave him a little more because we were a really rowdy group and made a bit of a mess.

While I understand tipping them, and I know they do this at every hall, I hate it more that they tell you what to tip!! Its a tip- shouldn't it be up to us what to give?

Maybe I don't understand the whole process but don't you pay gratuity to the RH when you pay? So I don't understand why you have to tip everyone also, where does the gratuity go?

I asked my hall what was included in the grat and they said all staff, except for maitre'd. I believe he said $3 pp.

ours said 3-5 per person. we are obviously not giving 5 unless the dress rips off my body and he personally stiches every bead together LOL j/k!

Re: Tipping maitre d'
The hall gives you an average, but ultimately you tip whateer you feel appropriate for their work done.
I anticipated giving my maitre d' the average of the recommended amount, but ended up giving considerably less b/c of things did and didn't do that left a BIG impression on me.

I was told the gratuity paid goes to the wait staff, bar staff, valet, etc. Not the Maitre d

My hall said 3-5 a person but they won't be waiting with there hands open.... Call me cheap but I didn't leave one cause they charged me an 18% service charge. when i asked what was a service charge they said for valet parking and coat check... that sounded like a tip to me!
