Maybe I am alone on this one, but why do we have to tip everyone whose services we are paying for (and some of us are paying an arm and a leg for!!!) and to provide services which we hired them to provide???!?!?!??!?!?!? I think it is so ridiculous!
Tipping for a make-up trial we book to decide whether or not we want to use their services - which is a trial we have to pay for?!?!?!??! (and paying for a trial is another topic not to get me started on by the way!)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I work in the food service industry so I understand why tipping is important, but if I am using you as my florist/photographer/limo company/dj/make-up artist, etc., and paying $X,XXX.XX for your services - why do I need to tip them for DOING THEIR JOB??
Am I the crazy one here????????????????

Nope! I am with you! I think the 'wedding industry' really rips people off in a big way. Think about it. You can call to get any of these services for another function and it would be a fraction of the price. They hear the word 'WEDDING' and the price for the same service skyrockets. It's not fair. Don't they make enough money off of us?

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
I have to agree! I have reached my limit today! My limit was when I called bus companies that told me a bus is $55 per hour with a 4 hour limit! And I have to tip! Hello I am asking you to go 15 minutes away! start at the hotel at 10:30am and pick up at 5 pm...1 trip there...1 back...and I have to pay for at least 4 hours to just sit there!
AND TIP! For what!?! driving 15 minutes away and charging me more.....vent sorry...this post came on the wrong (or right night)!!!
edited for spelling

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
You have to realize that if you're having a traditional Long Island wedding that MOST of the companies you are using around here are big businesses owned by a select few that hire out freelancers to do ALL of the work. Those BIG BUCKS you are paying go towards the owner's Jags, vacations, etc. The people who are with you on your wedding day make VERY little compared to what you are paying in total. Yes, it's very easy to say..'Well, if they want more money, they should go out and start their own business.' In any other state, that would be well and good, but in an area like this it's very difficult to compete with these wedding factory business. Phew. Do I sound bitter? I'm not! I just thought I'd share the other side with you. My FI works in the wedding industry.

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
You guys are right. Tipping is way out of control. One of my bridesmaids just got married last year. She was telling me that the worst part of her wedding was all the money she had to shell out for tips. It was something like $3000. Like we don't pay enough as it is. Not to say we shouldn't thank people for doing their best on our wedding day, but sometimes I feel enough is enough.

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
i totally agree. Tipping is supposed to be a sign of appreciation when someone goes ABOVE and BEYOND their duties... a sign of gratitude for doing that. When you think of it, it's very nervy for (esp. limo companies) to say $xxxx.xx PLUS gratuity. dont tell me i HAVE to be gratuitous, GIVE me something to be gratuitous for,,, and THEN i'll show my appreciation! Plus, if that company adds that b/c they want to make sure their workers are taken care of, then they should just pay their workers better.
does that mean that i should tell my guests how much money they should give me? b/c they should be grateful that i invited them? i do think its rude... especially w/ the prices already what they are.
(sorry to the LIWer who's husband works in the field.... its not his fault that it is like this, but its jsut a frustrating situation).

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
I really dont want to tip all these vendors and to tell you the truth I might not because we are all overpaying for their services to begin with. If someone does a really great job, then yes of course, but I really dont want to lay out another few thousand on top of everything else-it is ridiculous. We'll see I guess. It just gets me really mad.

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
I agree what everyone is saying. It's so annoying that tipping is expected no matter what kind of service they provide.
I am really dreading the tipping part. Of course I will be tipping - but besides the photographer - we'll probably never see our vendors again!

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
I actaully called to see where our 'gratutity' is going b/c I don't think I need to double tip anyone. (i got voice mail)--and the make up person, it's her own business, i tip her? The tip list is endless and i just don't like it!

You are singing my song, sister!!
Maybe we should start a revolution!!!
Again - no offense to those who have family in the wedding industry - I work in food service, I understand gratuties; but tipping for something we pay so much for is outrageous!

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
I LOVE THIS THREAD!!!!! it annoyed us SO much that we had to tip our vendors. I do not mind tipping but by our wedding day we were TAPPED! We had no $ left and the little that we had we wanted to take on our HM. Yeah it is crazy. When you talk wedding stuff it is always in thousands. Towards the end, you are like..'What is another hundred dollars here and there?' Money just gets thrown around.

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
It makes me crazy!!!!
But I do have a question..... My hall is X amount plus Tax and Gratuities...Do I need to tip the Maitre D, Captain, Bartender etc.? Or is that what my gratuities goes to?
Also, I am a strong believer in that if a vendor goes above and beyond, they deserve a tip but that is to decide after their work is done and seen NOT for me to stay up the night before and make envelopes. WHAT IF THEY SUCK? (Which they better not but you know what I mean)
And...if the vendor is an owner...I plan on giving NO tip! Call me cheap....call me what you want to but it aint happening.

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
After looking at my budget sheet- we are tipping about 2000.00 total for all our vendors. I believe that is on the low side (15% per vendor), and could possibly go up.
I dont know if the 15% gratuity my hall is charging goes to the Banquet manager, the maitre'd, or to the hall. I called Astoria manor, and they claimed the gratuity goes to the staff....But I am worried that it doesn't really get to them. I would be interested to see what you hall says, Flaca.

It is ridiculous. It really pisses me off. There are so many people you have to tip, and it all adds up. Photographer, DJ, limo, florist, hair/makeup, maitre'd at wedding. Ugh.

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
I tipped my guitarist because he was GREAT -- came early to practice with my sister, learned new pieces for me....and I gave him a nice tip. Well, he sent me an email IMMEDIATELY thanking me for my generosity!!! He was so thankful. Thing is I thought he really deserved it - he came from Brooklyn to Peconic! And then went back!
That was 1 of like 3 tips I didn't mind giving -- the other 2 were to the maitre 'd (excellent job) and the officiant who was also wonderful. Oh and my cake lady because she is so underpriced compared to all the prices I have heard on here.

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
Fortunately for me....I loved everyone (except for one vendor) I chose for my wedding...so tipping them made me happy - a way to let them know I truly appreciated what they did to make my day great.

Re: Tipping Makes Me Mad!
My biggest pet peeve on this one is the tipping you have to pay for in advance, for example the gratuity for the hall and the limo driver. What if the service stinks? If the driver gets lost and the service is awful, I can't withhold the tip, because I have already paid it in order to book the car in the first place. One of the limo companies ticked me off b/c when I asked if the 'service charge' included gratuity. She replied with some lame answer that basically was yes, but wanted me to think that some of the money also went to other expenses like the rising cost of gas- what a crock- and I believe this was to make me feel like the driver wouldn't get all of it and I should tip above that. Needless to say, I went with another company.
