Maybe I am alone on this one, but why do we have to tip everyone whose services we are paying for (and some of us are paying an arm and a leg for!!!) and to provide services which we hired them to provide???!?!?!??!?!?!? I think it is so ridiculous!
Tipping for a make-up trial we book to decide whether or not we want to use their services - which is a trial we have to pay for?!?!?!??! (and paying for a trial is another topic not to get me started on by the way!)

I work in the food service industry so I understand why tipping is important, but if I am using you as my florist/photographer/limo company/dj/make-up artist, etc., and paying $X,XXX.XX for your services - why do I need to tip them for DOING THEIR JOB??

I COMPLETELY AGREE! In fact..I think I said the EXACT same thing a month ago I'm so sick of paying tips to people who are doing there job! THey aren't minimum wage workers who need it..they are chargiing $$$ for something...and yes the work might be wonderful and all that..but If you spend months tryign to find work at a good price, why would you want to tag on hundreds of dollars to tip people on top of their price...and all of the people I am working with are small business...like JUST THEM or them and one assistant. I know they get paid..so what's the deal?

Also, who says the tip has to be hundreds of dollars? I followed my own rules about tipping. As far as the sub-contractors go, I agree, these people aren't the ones making the big bucks that we pay for the services. They are only making a small scale comparatively. That really stinks. But there is nothing we can do to change that. IF they don't make enough money for what they do, they need to re-negotiate.

Thank you SO much for posting this thread. When we first started our planning, we could NOT believe how so many places and services were X amount of dollars and then had some % SERVICE CHARGE, but it was NOT a gratuity. Then what the hell is a service charge??? Why isn't a service just a certain amount of $$ instead of tacking on all sorts of random charges that aren't even the tips!!!

welcome to my life. My bosses make all the big bucks, i do all the paperwork and running around and work my butt of, and i dont get Tipped at the end of the night... i get my regular paycheck at the end of the week.
i'm going to put a tip jar on my desk. we'll see how well that works out

If you think tipping the vendors is a lot, wait until your reception hall tells you what is 'customary' to tip the waiters, the Matre D and the bridal attendent. I almost fell off my chair when I added the numbers. Granted the Matre D might be doing behind the scenes work, but I already paid a tremendous amount of money to the hall and I never even met the Matre D until the day of the wedding and I swear I couldn't tell you who he was at the end of the night and he is supposed to get the most money of them all. hundreds and hundreds of dollars just to him. You are supposed to like calculate like $2 per head at your wedding. So if you have 200 people at your wedding, you are 'supposed' to give the Matre D $400??????

And...if the vendor is an owner...I plan on giving NO tip! Call me cheap....call me what you want to but it aint happening.
I agree- my band is not through a company and neither is any of my other services. They are all indepedent contractors. I will tip only if they go above and beyond. IF you wanted more money,you should have charged me more. As for hair and makeup, they are getting a gift, not a tip. They are not working out of a salon or paying for overhead.

To all the ladies, I couldn't agree with you more. If all/most vendors put gratuity in the total amount, then why should we tip them??? and for what????? I don't understand it
