I just received a sheet from my hall and at the bottom it says:
The folloiwing as a list of suggestive gratutites to take care of the day of your wedding:
maitred' bridal attendant bartenders coat check your banquet manager
Has anyone tipped their banquet manager????? I figured it was their job and they're the one slamming ME for money and making me paying for 20 people who are not coming since I didn't make my minimum. I never saw anything with regard to this before...do I have to tip my BM?????

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
I only tipped maitre'd, bridal attendant, and captain. The first two waited on me and DH hand over foot. Since we only had a MOH and BM they also were very good to my brother and my handicapped Dad who were included in the processional.
My brother has been in a lot of weddings and said maitre'd was one of the best.
As for the captain, only saw him when he took our order.
I did not tip anyone else. Banquet manager was in the hall the day of my wedding but didn't do anything for mine.

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
I assume as the banquet manager she will be doing banquet manager things???? I assumed that was just what her job as a banquet manager did. Maybe I'm wrong. She sets up the placecards, puts out the favors, makes sure my cake gets there, and oversees everthing. I guess I never gave any thought to the banquet manager before. I just knew to tip the standard people...maitre de and bridal attendant and such.

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
I have to give an Executive Gratuity as a tip that day and it will be divided that amongst all the workers.

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
Wait a minute...what about the 18% gratuity that is included when you book the place??? I thought that covers the BM and the waiting staff. The only one that gets tipped separately is the Maitre'D

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
Don't the bm's get comission when you book????? I didn't tip my bm even though he was there the day of the wedding. I guess if one went really out of his way and let you get alot of freebies ( mine did but I still did not feel the need to tip him )
ETA: I would call them and tell them that they can consider the 20 plates you are paying for that they DO NOT have to actually make the BM's tip.

You said what I am thinking exactly. I thought that was what the 18% grat goes to so this way you don't have to chase people around all night to tip them.

I will not be tipping the BM. I can't, just CAN'T, tip every single person regarding my wedding. It's getting ridiculous

Even he said 'no need to tip me, I get paid for booking you'. I htink it's crazy that your hall sent you a letter.

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
Ok....I'm glad I'm not crazy although when I asked people at work they all said YES OF COURSE you tip the BM. So now I'm feeling guilty. I'm getting married at the MPI where its just one wedding at a time so maybe my BM does more? She kinda runs things the day of the wedding. Makes sure everything is running smoothly. But like someone posted I'm sure she gets a commission for the weddings that are booked. She's like an executive no? I don't know, I'm still baffled. I wouldn't even know WHAT to tip her!

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
You should try to negotiate for extras to balance out the 20 plates you are paying for (that no one will eat). That was the deal we were offered if our minimum was not met. jmo

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
I have a friend in the business...YOU DONT HAVE TO TIP BM...You tip the maitre'd (which he doesnt get to keep the whole thing anyway..he gets a percentage, the rest goes to the 'house'!)...and tip your Bridal Attendant...bridal attendant usually doesnt get enough credit. They are in charge of all the little things, and keeping your business in order especially at the end of the night.
Bartenders make out on the deal anyway- so dont tip them additional. Only tip them if you request that they do not have out a tip cup b/c their shift pay isnt nearly as much as the waitstaff.
eta: Tell them you want the food wrapped up...chances are they will let you slide on it b/c it's too much of a pain to give you all those dinners!!!

Yes, get them to wrap up those dinners for you. Put as many as you can in your freezer and when you get home from yoour honeymoon you don't have to cook for TEN DAYS!!!
That's what I did... we were 4 people under our minimum including vendors. Our BM looked down upon it and kinda smurked but I was firm about this.

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
Im paying the 18% PLUS they require a $300 tip for the Maitre D, who is also my BM. I was told thats all included in my total. Do I have to bring money the day of to tip yet AGAIN?

I think I'm just going to give the banquet manager one of the favors that I make up as a thank you, but no tip.

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
Seriously- chances are the BM is getting a 'commission' on what he booked you out as. As far as the maitre'd if they are including it in- I dont agree with it, b/c at most halls you're lucky of you see the maitre'd very much at all (from past experience).
Dont bring extra money for additional tipping. Usually with tipping the maitre'd its like $2 per person or maybe $3 (from what I hear).
So have 2 envelopes at the end...the maitre'd and and the bridal attendant ($50)...thats it and be done with it.
BMs make out rather nicely...trust me!

Re: Tipping the Banquet Manager
eta..the 18% gratuity is the pay for the waitstaff...not a tip for the waitstaff..their actual pay whis is approximately $65 per shift.
