So we are wondering if you are supposed to tip all of the table waiters at the wedding individually. I just saw on our budget that FH budgeted $3,000 to tip the waiters!!! Is this what you do?

Re: Tipping Waiters at the wedding?
No, I never heard of that. The gratuity you pay as part of your payments to your RH includes tipping the waiters...I also heard that the tip you give to your maitre d includes a tip for the waiters as well (but I'm not sure about that part). No need to give an additional tip...

I know as a guest I've always tipped the waitstaff ($20+ for the night).

Re: Tipping Waiters at the wedding?
Generally, my family usually tips waiters and bartenders at any function...which is why I do. So we will probably tip a bit extra, even though it is included already.

check with your RH - the tip should be included in the price. As far as tipping extra, we are not. However, when I am a guest at at wedding, I usualy tip the waitstaff/bartender extra. It's up to my guests if they want to do that, and most of them do that anyway.

I just wanted to add that I used to be a server at a private country club on the south shore. The gratuity charge received by the club was not passed on to the servers at the end of the night. So in essence, there was little incentive to provide expectional service. The few times that I was slipped a few bucks (20-50 dollars) before the reception always put a bit more pep in my step.

NO!!! You are already paying gratuity in the price of the RH.
I have been to weddings where the waiter was awesome so everyone at the table left him a couple bucks but as the bride and groom you have already done it

I second this... In the 3 halls I worked at we never received the grat. charge either at the end of the night... Its sad... But in our case it went to the 'house' or the owner. When we used to question was always told it paid our wages (which waitstaff pay is MUCH lower then reg min. wage last time I waitered it was barely $4 an hour), but when we would see the contract and see there was a 2-3000 grat charge... there was ALWAYs a surplus of like a $1000 that went to the 'house.'
ETA: sorry forgot to answer the initial question.. Do whats in your budget... I plan on giving waitstaff around $20bucks extra each if we have it then. Being in the business, I had a whole discussion about this with our BM and he gave me the breakdown of how their grat fee is divided.

AS guest at wedding we always tipped the waiter $40 ( both have worked in catering) It depends how much staff there is if you have 10 watiers just giving them $20 each it is a nice gesture

FH and I will def be tipping each waiter additional on top of whats included with the RH. I know that your supposed to give all tips to Maitre D but we wont be doing that. Each wait staff will get their own individual envelope. You never know with these places.....the Maitre D (as good and nice as he may be) may not spread it out to the waiters, ect. JMO. So again, each waiter, maitre d, bridal attendant will get their own envelope with whatever tip FH and I decide to give
BTW.....$3,000.00 to budget for tips for staff is way too high IMO! YOu can def go down on that.

Nope.
We went to a wedding at our RH last year and we tried to tip the waiter cuz he was great but he wouldn't accept.
The same is supposd to be true for our bartender.

Re: Tipping Waiters at the wedding?
My sister worked at 2 large catering halls on long island as one of the waitstaff, and she said she really appreciated when the bride and groom took the time to tip the waitstaff. The gratuity gets split up between the Matre-de (sp) and others working during the event, not the waitstaff.
**Double check this with your Matre-de (sp) to see if they have the same system at your reception hall**
The suggestion my sister gave me was finding out the names of the waitstaff that will be working that night, and making an envelope for each name to make sure it gets to the actual waitstaff.
My family and I never knew this until my sister started working in catering.
I hope this helps! And if you have any questions you have for me or my sister, let me know!

Re: Tipping Waiters at the wedding?
wow this is all really good to know! I will check with my hall because they are charging us an extra $1.50 per person and I believe I was told that that was divided up and given to the waitstaff....that would leave them with an $18-20 tip each.
