My venue is charging a 20% service fee, but then advises that we tip 7 people (chef, matre D, attendants, 'captains') an additional 'discretionary' amount...what do you do/what would you do?! Isn't 20% enough or am I just being crazy since this wedding stuff is so expensive?

I thinks its a ripoff. I'm almost tempted to not tip at all but I would feel cheap. I know 3-5pp is a lot of money.

Re: Tipping, when your RH already charges 20%
I'm planning on tipping on top of that. I don't think actual servers, waiters, waitresses, bartenders will see a cent of that service charge.
I asked my banquet manager about this and he explained it to me like this - the service charge is the charge for all the setup (like we bring all the stuff - cake toppers, personal belongings etc - setting up etc...)
mine however was included in the price per person. I paid $83 per person at my RH but it did not include tips for the servers and bartenders
they gave me a list of tips
$25-50 per server/bartender your discretion
$2 per guest for the maitre d' tip
I believe I gave 350 for the maitre d and we had about 96 guests (I thought 2pp was a little cheap since I heard the normal raite was 3-5 bucks per guest)
I think I gave the servers and bartenders 300 to split and there was 7 of them
some people might think im cheap other might think i'm generous...
Its your discretion - give what u are comfortable with...

I just looked at my contract and they said $5-7pp.... I think $7 is ridiculous.

we are getting charged a 20% service fee plus a $3 pp host fee so i don't think we're going to be tipping anyone at the RH on top of that bs

Re: Tipping, when your RH already charges 20%
we have a 20% service chagre on our contract which is taxed. when we went for our food tasting we asked the owner of the hall & she said that is the tip for everyone at the hall. (coat check, wait staff, valet parking, bridal attendant, etc.)
& since our contract also includes the matri d tip we do not have to worry about tipping anyone at the hall the night of the wedding.
