Tipping/giftcards?

I decided to get my alter boys gift cards instead of cash. I was wondering if people think this would be a good idea for thoses vendor that own the business? I was not going to do for those that work for the company i do relize that there tip is a big part of there pay. Let me know what you all think.

Please though DO NOT buy those cards in CVS or the drug store ones. Those cards are all scams. They are very hard to use and the fees associated with each purchase are insane.

Personally... i don't see why you wouldn't want to just give cash. it's easier for you and the recipient. Unless the gift card is for a specific store (which i don't think really qualifies as a tip) then the gift cards are usually not worth it. Who wants to pay money to spend money?? People prefer cash. And those that are working and relying on tips..... are not expecting a giftcard. You just can't do as much with a gift card as you can with cash.

Remember credit card companies own those gift cards...

Personally...i'm not a fan at all.

I agree with Kerri -- Cash is always better to the recipient and it costs you the same amount so what's the difference to you?

If the alter boys are young, I could see giving them gift cards, but you still run the risk of them not liking the ones you get them.

How much is customary to give them anyway?

How are the ones at CVS scams? I always buy them from there and Walgreens and never had any issues w/ anyone using them. As for fees the only ones that charge are Visa, M/C and Amex...right? I never once paid extra on 'store' or 'resturant' ones....hope im not missing something!

That all depends on what service the vendor is for and how much it's running you.

It's hard to answer this blanket question. You really can't unless you are more specific.

There are tons of tipping threads... just do a search and you will find lists of average tips for each type of vendor.

stores and restaurant ones are usually always fine. I've never come across one that had any hidden fees. Even like hair salon or nail place gift certs or cards are fine.

The one's I always get from people are CRAP (not specific store ones... the drug store ones)! pure crap!! Usually there's a $5.95 fee for activation. Then there can be fees per each charge you use it for. Then there can be monthly fees associated with it (they start after you activate the card, and it's if you don't use the whole card in one lump purchase). Also, I've had problems even using the cards in different places. I HATE when I get those stupid cards. Lately I keep getting them too. I know it's a gift and it's the thought.... so i never say anything or complain....but secretly... I HATE HATE HATE those cards.

bottom line is, you have to read all the fine print. There tends to be a lot of hidden charges. The gift cards you can buy from a bank are usually better than those from a drug store.

Oh OK.
I think $15 to 20 was the average for alter boys.

My church had suggested gift cards for the alter boys so i decided to get movie theather gift cards. My thought was to use my rewards points that are just sitting there, its just an idea, so it would save us in the long run.
