Re: TIVO 101

We have a Tivo and we love it! I got it for FH last Christmas. You buy the Tivo box, and which ranges in price. You can go to the Tivo website. I think I got mine for $200, and it is an 80 hour one. But depending on when you buy it, you can get them cheap since they go on sale. It is also about $12 a month to subscribe for service. You also need an internet connection, but I think wireless is easiest. This is what we do. Basically, you can pick shows to record, and the Tivo can go online and update info itself. So if a show changes time or channel, it doesn't matter. Also, you can do season passes where it tapes the show for the entire season and you can choose if you want just first run or also repeats. Two of the coolest features are:

1. The Tivo tapes things that it thinks you will like, based on the other things you have taped

2. If you are away from home but need to tape something, you can go online and enter in what you want to tape, and the tivo will get the info. I think you just need 24 hours lead time, or something like that.

I hope that helped and I just realized that this should have been an FM since it was so long. But...I LOVE our Tivo, so I guess everyone should read this.

I'll have to ask FH, since he was the one that actually set it up .

Your TIVO needs to 'talk' to the outside world so you either need an ethernet (Computer) connection or one to the phone line. We have ours through the computer and its pretty easy.
There is also a cablevision (or time warner-depending on where you live) DVR which does not need the internet connection just the cable line. With this option you also dont buy the box, you dont need a cable box and TIVO, and it costs less.
I honestly dont know too much about the cable company version (we just got this). But I do have both the TIVO and the cablevision DVR. So far both have pros and cons but the DVR is defiantly easier to hook up initially!

It has to be a regular phone line.... we have major issues here because we have a cable phone line (Vonage) and the Tivo doesn't support that. So now we need to get the ethernet adapter for $40 so that it can go through the computer. We got the 140 hour Tivo on sale for $199 at Circuit City.

We have cable phone and we only use a wireless adapter and I attached a router to our TIVO. It makes all of its phone calls through the adapter. You have to be connected to a land line 1 time for the initial set-up though. We brought it to my parents house for that

We have 2 TIVO's and are planning on buying one more. Both TIVO's work through the same adapter but each TIVO needs it's own router.

TIVO is wonderful!! We have 2 Tivo boxes and one DirecTV box with Tivo. I got one of my boxes from Ebay with lifetime membership for that box. I saved $100.

Set up is pretty easy once you get it. If you have problems you can go to the tivo.com/forums and ask questions there. The company I used to work for manages that portion of the site and I was the account manager. Let me know if you have any other specific questions.
