FH's birthday is next week and I was thinking about getting him Tivo--the 80 hour one that's also a DVD player/recorder looked like the best option. I was thinking about getting a 3 month gift subscription because I really can't swing the lifetime $299 fee right now. Any warnings/advice--is this a good gift? Thanks!!

keep in mind the lifetime fee is for the tivo you buy... if you upgrade in the future...that has a seperate fee

i love tivo - it is the best - i recieved it as a gift totally outright - but the $12 is not too bad a month - especially when you are giving such a good tivo box

I think Tivo is a great gift. Personally, I'd go for the non DVD one and the lifetime subscription though. I think DVD recorders are going to go way down in price over the next year. I am also wary of dual use equipment, because it is more that could break. Whatever you decide he (and you) are going to love it!!!

ABSOLUTELY! Your FH will love you forever....I did this for my husband when we were ating and I fell in love with it!
Now that we don't have DirectTV in the apt (bad positioning) I MISS MY TIVO!!

tivo rocks we paid the 199. back in 2000 and it ends up being cheaper than paying monthly. some systems let you transfer the service to upgraded boxes we had the original 20 hour one and switched to an 80 hour one and they let us transfer the service.

shana -- feel your pain, we dont have our DTV anymore either and i missed the tivo that we had with it!!
We then got the comcast DVR (from the cable company) and it was NOT as good.
We went and bought the TIVO 35hr (?i think) box a few weeks ago at best buy, it was 199 and then there is a 100$ rebate. We are paying the monthly fee because it just seemed to make more sense. It will be 2 years before we are spednign more than the montly fee (breaking even) and at this point the monthly wasnt really in our budget.

I thought about getting it for my DH also. What happens with tivo if you move? We'll be moving next summer, should I wait until we're settled to get it?

just take the tivo with you and plug it in. you may have to do the set-up over depending on how far you move, like if you switch area codes. we moved this summer, just a few blocks and we just plugged it in, no problems.
