TMI our rottie is in heat - help

She's bleeding all over the place.
I know they make little 'panties' for this. But there is no way that will work with my dog. Any suggestions other than me following her around with a sponge.

Hi... I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a question.. Do you have to wait for the first heat before spaying???? I figured I would ask>> But good luck, Oh, I remember my girlfriend confining her dog to a tiled area, I know it's not an answer, but you never know... Good Luck!!!

Honestly that is all I can think of. With my Doberman when she went in heat my mother bought rubber pants and put a sanitary pad in there and cut a hole for her tail. All was good until she got out and the mailman brought her back in her purple lollipop underpants and my brother tried to deny that she was even ours since he was so embarrassed!

Good luck I am sure it will be a rough week.

I think you are supposed to let them go through at least one heat cycle.

No, it's best to get them spayed before the first heat. I don't know why, but that's what I heard. And I think the panties are the only thing for the bleeding

Karissa you had to see the sight! My poor puppy and my completely mortified brother, here's his 'tough' dog in purple lollipop pants --

Danielle you are right--- I googled- I guess my Mom was wrong (the same woman that put the dog in the pants )

----If a female dog is spayed before her first heat cycle, her risk of developing breast cancer is only 0.05%. If she is spayed after having only one heat cycle, her risk of breast cancer jumps to 8%. If she is spayed after her second heat cycle, that risk becomes 26%... that's more than 1 in 4! Spaying a dog after her third heat cycle may reduce the risk of mammary carcinoma (breast cancer) but not appreciably. The take-home message: intact female dogs are 50 times more likely to get breast cancer than a dog spayed prior to her first heat cycle. Ogilvie, Moore. Managing the Veterinary Cancer Patient: a practice manual. 1995
Cats that are spayed prior to 1 year of age have a mere 0.6% risk of developing mammary carcinoma, which is a very aggressive, often fatal, cancer in cats. More than 99% of cats diagnosed with mammary carcinoma are intact (not spayed). Fossum, et al. Small Animal Surgery, 2nd Edition, 2002. p632-633

Molly went through her first heat at 7 months.. a week b/f I was set to get her spayed.

What I did was wrap a pee pee pad around her- fashioned a diaper- you can try that.
