To buy new shoes, or let my dress drag on the floor??
Original post by monelwookie
Ok ladies i need your help. I picked up my dress and saturday and its totally PERFECT, except for one small detail, its a bit too long. My dress maker is afarid to make it shorter b/c she will have to take it apart, and she's afarid that she will mess it up big time. So i have 2 options...(1) buy some 4' heals, that i KNOW i cannot walk in (and run the risk of breaking my a*s on my wedding day) or....(2) stick with the shoes that i have (that has a 2 1/2' heal) and let my dress drag on the floor a bit. WHAT SHOULD I DO

the problem is that she cannot hem the dress from the bottom b/c of the detail on the bottom. And she was being really honest by telling me that it would be 'big trouble' if she were to take the dress apart....
Dresses with details on them are lifted at the waist and the side seams taken in a little. It is done all the time. Sounds like your seamstress doesn't quite know what she is doing or she is truly afraid of taking the dress apart.
yes - it can be hemmed at the waist

does any know of someone in or around NYC that is reasonably priced??
I have someone in the Bronx - on Williamsbridge Road - she does all my alterations and did my best friend's wedding dress alterations. FM me if you want her info.

I have the same issue with my dress. Lots of detail on the bottom and a scalloped edge. They are going to put a piece of crinilin (sorry if spelled wrong) underneath to push it out a little bit, just so it doesn't drag on the floor. I wasn't happy with the choice at first, but realized 4' heels wouldn't work for me and I didn't want it to drag. The more I thought about it, it is the best way and it will make it look prettier since the dress won't be clinging to my legs.
Good luck.

What about option #3- see if you can find another seamstress who will be confident and fix the length? Phyllis from Bridal Elegance in Dix Hills is a miracle worker and reasonable too!! I would not wear 4' heels or let it drag! You paid a pretty penny for your dress, girl!! HTH!
I agree. Take it to someone else. Phyllis is great and so are her prices! I'm sure she would be able to help. Don't get stuck wearing painful shoes on your wedding day. With everything you've spent to make your day perfect, what's a little bit more $ to make sure you won't be uncomfortable or tripping over your dress? good luck!

Find someone who can alter the dress without taking it apart. I am sure it can be done. Good Luck

Was there a cap on your alterations? I can't figure out why she wouldn't want to fix it, all dresses are fixable. Did you wear your shoes when you went for alterations? Seems shady to me! I would use another seamstress.

Take your dress to someone who will make it the right length-Granted your dress will drag and it will get dirty but the difference in heel height and length is too much! You could rip your dress or hurt yourself in the process

I have 3 inch shoes, could you try to find only slightly higher shoes? Just a thought.
