To buy new shoes, or let my dress drag on the floor??
Ok ladies i need your help. I picked up my dress and saturday and its totally PERFECT, except for one small detail, its a bit too long. My dress maker is afarid to make it shorter b/c she will have to take it apart, and she's afarid that she will mess it up big time. So i have 2 options...(1) buy some 4' heals, that i KNOW i cannot walk in (and run the risk of breaking my a*s on my wedding day) or....(2) stick with the shoes that i have (that has a 2 1/2' heal) and let my dress drag on the floor a bit. WHAT SHOULD I DO

If I were you, I would find a seamstress who knew what she was doing and get it altered correctly.

What about option #3- see if you can find another seamstress who will be confident and fix the length? Phyllis from Bridal Elegance in Dix Hills is a miracle worker and reasonable too!! I would not wear 4' heels or let it drag! You paid a pretty penny for your dress, girl!! HTH!

I vote for neither. The dress should be altered to fit your shoes. It's not so much an issue of letting it drag or not - you could trip!!!! It's just not that great to have it 1 1/2 inches too long.
So have her fix the hem or take it somewhere that feels comfortable doing it for you.

i agree. i don't understand why she can't just fix it? i would think she could figure out how to do it without messing up, cause well...she's a dressmaker!
trust me, if its too long---you WILL be uncomfortable and likely trip on it. you don't want that at all. you'll spend the day/nite kicking at the fabric of your dress so that it's ahead of you as you are walking...you don't want that.
tell her that she needs to fix it--or get a new seamstress. this is what you are paying her to do.

the problem is that she cannot hem the dress from the bottom b/c of the detail on the bottom. And she was being really honest by telling me that it would be 'big trouble' if she were to take the dress apart....

I agree - You've paid a lot of money for a beautiful dress that should not be dragging across the floor. Don't wear 4' heels -that's torture.
Everyone raves about Phyllis - see if she can take the dress up.

This dress is not so bad to hem - my seamstress was telling me how they do it all the time - they just pull it up from the waist - they do NOT touch the bottom hem.
So basically it's like they open up the seam at the waist (under all that pretty beading) cut or pull up from there, re-sew and wa'la. I'm surprised she didn't tell you this was an option.

Take it to someone else!! Don't let her do it if she cannot or doesn't feel comfortable! You dress is stunning! Take it to Phyllis!!

Dresses with details on them are lifted at the waist and the side seams taken in a little. It is done all the time. Sounds like your seamstress doesn't quite know what she is doing or she is truly afraid of taking the dress apart.

i have a similar dress - is yours a mori lee? - and i was told by my bridal salon that if it needed to be taken up, it could be done, but it would just take longer because they would need to do it from the waist - but i think that any competent seamstress should be able to do that without messing up the dress!!

yes, it is mori lee and she was so scared to touch it, that she made me scared to let ANYONE touch it!!!! She explained to me why it was not a good idea to take it from the waist, but i totally foregot why. Can i have the # to Philis...i'll give her a call ASAP

ditto. not to sound mean, but i think your seamstress is just giving you a load of bullsh*t. she can easily bring the dress up from the waist, and that is one of the most common types of hems. trust me, i know. my dress had to be both taken in and picked up a lot....and there was plenty of detailing on the entire thing (especially in the front)...and i didn't even have a good separation between bodice and skirt, like your gown does.
i think she's making up excuses for you--trust me, if you take your gown to someone like Phyllis @ Bridal Elegance (who did mine), they will do it with no problem.

I would definitely take it to someone else. They take it up from the waist all of the time. I am surprised she thought it would be that complicated. Good luck!!

If I were you, I would have her take it up, its your special day, thats the last thing you need is your dress dragging after all the time and money you have spent on it. I would make sure she did it, or take it to someone who could. Good luck with everything.

That's how it is done. A dress with beading or lace on the hem cannot be hemmed. It has to be lifted at the waist. The sides are then taken in as well.

okay, this wkend i'm going to find someone else to take it too, becuase if i take it to her and she DOES mess it up, then she can say 'i told you this would happen', and i would have to break my foot off in her a*s
