FH and I are on a very tight budget and we’re taken care of everything but the flowers. This is the last thing I’m taking care of b/c quite frankly, I’m terrified!! My sister (who got married 7 years ago) keeps telling me how expensive they’re going to be and truthfully I’m not really all that interested in flowers. I’m certainly not interested in paying thousands of dollars for things that will wilt!
FMIL (who lives in FL) offered to create the table centerpieces. She’s very creative and great at this kind of thing. My concerns are
1-She’s only going to be here for a few days before the wedding. Is creating centerpieces something we really want to do?
2-Won’t buying the flowers be almost as expensive?
So what d’ya think and if you wouldn’t mind sharing how much are you paying for your flowers? I really don’t know enough yet to make a decision. Please help!!!
Thanks in advance!!!

Re: To DIY or not to DIY
when you say she can create the CP's...do you mean with silk flowers? in that case i don't think it would be more expensive.
what type of CP are you going for? i cut corners with my CP's by making them mostly non-floral and only using rose petals with them

Re: To DIY or not to DIY
Not silk flowers. She is an interior desginer so she works with florist companies a lot and has a wholesale hook up for fresh flowers. Not sure what we are looking for but nothing too big.
I have very simple taste and was thinking of something low. Our colors are sienna and brown.
Thanks!!

Re: To DIY or not to DIY
How about you nix the floral CP, do candles and maybe some rose petals and go to Stop and Shop and have your bo-k's made there... I hear they do a wonderful job and it's really not very expensive.

Yes sometimes after buying all the items you need to make the CP will end up being just as much as just hiring a florist... Defintly do more research.. To me, its worth it to just pay them and not have any worries...

Re: To DIY or not to DIY
I paid about 1100 for my flowers but I only got 1 Centerpiece for the front table display. I had 7 boutonieres, 6 BM bouquets, my bouquet, groom boutoniere, 1 kissing ball, 1 flower wreath for the flower girl, flower petals for my flower cones and for the flower basket. You can always have a simple candle centerpiece or ask your hall if they can incluse their centerpieces for you. Thats what my hall did. Hope this helps XOXOXO Kitty

Re: To DIY or not to DIY
Actually doing it yourself is relatively cheap!
Here is a site where you can order the flowers and make the centerpeices yourself.
Talk to her and see if this is something that she is really up to do it. Some people just loke to help and have a passion for things so they try to get any chance they have to do it.
If you still have doubts about pricing have her make a quote for you. I am sure it will all work out.

The thing that ***** about DIY CP is that you need someone to actually bring the CPs to the RH to do the setup. Are you really going to want to worry about that on your wedding day?

Re: To DIY or not to DIY
We are DIY'ing our flowers. I think the florists are toooooo pricey for what I want.
Our centerpieces are french tulips in 24' Trumped vases with votives around the bottom........
Our bouquets are the tulips for the BM's and my bouquet is french tulips with hydrengeas.
Anyways, the site I am using is www.lwflowers.com. The prices are great and the service is too. Our DOC is setting it all up on the day of.
DIY'ing flowers, if you have the time, is the best way to go, IMO

Re: To DIY or not to DIY
I LOVED Melissa (Melabalala's) CP's. She used votives and rose petals on every table and it really set a very romantic mood. I don't think she DIY'd but I imagine they didn't cost as much as a traditional floral CP. You certainly can DIY them though Here's a pic. I have better one's in my album
