To get highlights.. or not??

To get highlights.. or not??

Hi Girls,

So I have very dark blond hair.. maybe even light brown in spots. I used to get medium blond highlights, but stopped about a year or more ago b/c I didnt' want to pay for them anymore, plus I wanted a more natural look.

I went for a hair trial and it was suggested that I get highlights to really show off the hair.. (hair sculpting by renee). She told me she does highlights herself.

I don't know what I want to do. I dont' really want to get into highlights all over again, and I'm worried I won't like how it looks (she suggested getting them in June for my July 3 wedding) and that I won't like it.. or that I will like it, but in pictures it'll look fake. I also thought about going to my salon (ID in Syosset) just b/c I've gotten highlights there before so its more familiar.

What do you girls think? I was goign to stick with my natural color, but then I asked some co-workers what they thought and they were all about me getting subtle highlights....

My mom thinks I should also.. fiance isn't crazy about the idea. Of course I know its my decision, but I really feel unsure! Someone also suggested getting them done now so I get used to it.. but I don't want them to start fading b/c I definitely don't want to get highlights redone in a matter of a few months.

TIA!!!

How did you like your hair with the hair trial without the highlights? I would say if you like your hair without the highlights, then dont highlight-- or if your deside to do it, I would do it now to see if you like it and then just go for a touch up closer to the wedding. and i would go to my normal salon if you deside to do it. good luck!

get them, natural ones since you like it natural and go to a colorist so you wont need touchups that often

my mom & sister are hair dressers & i had my share of any hair i wanted in my life.....

I have dark brown hair but wanted blond highliights & have done it a few times. I LOVE MY HAIR WITH HIGHLIGHTS!!!!!!!

The only down fall I can see is the keep up... I can't imagine paying for my highlights to be redone every 6 weeks! Not only is it expensive but annoying too!

If your hair is lighter it might not be as noticeable with roots but i personally had to go around every 6 weeks!

The trial I went to last week the stylist told me the same thing! I had highlights a few times in high school but I hate maintaining them. I decided against them because in the summer my hair gets lighter and is so much nicer then it is now. I don't like using chemicals in my hair.

get REALLY NATURAL highlights, and i would recommend getting them as soon as possible so you have time to fix things if it doesn't work out.

i get my highlights done in the city now, but when i did them on Long Island I went to Defranco Spagnolo salon in Great Neck and used Nicole. She did a great job, and I have curls, so sometimes that can be more difficult.

It sounds like you don't really want highlights so don't get them. Your hair is going to look amazing no matter what you do. Would they suggest highlighting just to get more money?

Thank you everyone for the replies.. I really appreciate it! I will check out that place in Great Neck as well. I sort of want them, but am nervous about it.. I think I'd wait until closer to the wedding though...

Just an FYI...that's her MO....most people I have talked to (including my cousin) she tried to get them to get highlights through her after their trials...and then was a bit pricey for them

I have to say as a hairdresser/colorist, I often recommend my clients to get highlights as they do photograph beautifully. You can do it so that it just looks sun kissed, not as close to roots and a bit lighter on the ends. But ultimately you have to be yourself and do what makes you feel the best!

JMO - I think you should do whatever you feel most comfortable doing, but as someone who had highlighted her hair for awhile and then let them grow out and did not do any dying for a loooong time, I was REALLY happy with my decision to highlight my hair before the wedding.

I'm definitely lucky in that my MIL is a hairdresser, so she colors my hair in exchange for a bottle of wine But I was nervous about it since I did like my hair one color. Yet I think it was really brought to the next level with the highlights.

Good luck

Re: To get highlights.. or not??

I recently colored my hair for the first time with the stylist I'll be working with for my wedding, so we're always thinking toward the wedding day hair. I was going to get subtle highlights and she showed me pictures and suggested getting more intense highlights because it does show up more in the dress work. I went with her suggestion and I am glad I did.

I was told the same thing before I got my hair done for my wedding. I have medium brown hair naturally, and I usually dye it darker. I wanted all of the detail in my hair to show, but yes, still look natural. I got them, and I loved them! I only kept them from 2 weeks before the wedding until 2 months after - then I went back to my regular Redken shades only.

I got them and I'm glad I got them!
