Re: to register or not
Our engagement party was waaayyyy before we started planning for our wedding and it was me and FH reserving a private room at a restaurant and treating our friends to nice dinner. We never expected gifts but some people brought champagne, frames and other gifts.
It's up to you if you want to or not, we personally did not.

Re: to register or not
Ok well we decided not to have an engagement party at all and I knew I wanted to wait till after the new year to register because I would have changed most of the stuff as the new things came out. I did have an aunt that kept asking me to register so that she could get me an engagement gift but I never did till the moment I wanted to. If you want to see new stuff come out then i'd wait.
thats tough but i understand both points...i didnt have an engagment party since we only had a year before the wedding and i didnt really want one so i am not much help. Maybe just make a registry for a few little things and ask for gift cards. i am sure peopple will still give you money. plus its too soon to register...if you are getting married in 10/09...the things you want now may not even be available by the time you have a bridal shower and that would mess up everything...meaning...if you picked out china and got half for an engagement gift..then it was discontinued in 6 months...your screwed!

Re: to register or not
maybe make a small registry now- just incase ther are people who insist on bringing an actual gift. This way it'll at least be something you want!

Did you post this on the 09 board or am I just COMPLETELY losing my mind? I know I replied, but it's not on here...so I must have replied to another one you posted. lol.
At any rate, yes, register.

One more thing....we didn't register for china b/c we were afraid of it getting discontinued by the time we were married. Also, we're not even sure we want china. We'll probably just get really nice everyday dishes.

Re: to register or not
My FH and I had our engagement party one month after we got engaged. We didn't register for our engagement party, we are actually going this weekend. When people asked us where we were registered we just told them that we weren't registered yet. Most people gave cash, a few gave gift cards, and a few bought gifts. I definitely don't think it's necessary to register for an engagement party.

Re: to register or not
We were registered... but we didn't let it be a well known fact. If someone asked, we said yes, and mentioned ONE place. That's it. People would ask to bring money or gifts, and I just said it was totally up to them. It's not really demanded, but most people will bring something. We actually earned back the money spent to have the party and then some..and got some really nice gifts from the ones closest to us!

I think that a small registry with key items like frames, candlesticks and maybe your cake server would be fine. This way your guests have option if they want to bring a gift.

Re: to register or not
I did not have one but a really close friend just had her engagement party a few weeks back. They did not register anywhere since it was only about a month after their engagement. Most everyone invited ended up getting them g/c to their favorite restaurants, the movies, ect. They really seemed to appreciate it

Re: to register or not
if you register at bed bath and beyond, you can return anything you want for cash back for up to i think 3 years after the wedding. we registered only for really expensive things and actually got some gifts at our engagement party that we're storing at my parent's house because our apartment is TOO small. but like i said, you can return anything
