To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

Is it me or does the platinum sratch easily? I love how the platinum metal shines, but I already have a few minor dents in my band

I ordered my wedding band over the weekend, and asked about getting the band polished before the big day, but it shouldn't be done too much or it will wear away the band!

Is this common, or should I just be more cautious?!

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

Platinum is supposed to be the most durable metal - more durable than gold and silver. If your bands are denting, or wearing away from normal wear and tear, you may not have a platinum band at all - it may just be white gold.

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

I also have platinum. I believe that while platinum is stronger (good for rings with side stones so the prongs wont break or bend), it does scratch easier. White gold is more scratch resistant but not as durable. Like anything else, there are pros and cons with both. In the end, I chose platinum becuase I have side stones.

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

I have a platinum ering and don't have any dents at all (and I am really hard on my hands and NEVER take off my ering).

Platnium does show scratches easily but that is because the rhodium coating (what makes platinum shiny) is being scratched - no the platinum. You can have your ring polished at the jewelers and the scratches disappear. After many years of use, the rhodium will wear away to reveal a more matte polish but you can have it redipped if you prefer the shiny or leave it matte (its nice that way too).

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

When I first got engaged, we took the ring back to be sized. It came back with a deep scratch, so I sent my FI back with it. Our jewler buffed it out. According to FI he had to really work at it for a while, but it buffed it out completely and I haven't seen any new scratched since. Maybe you can take yours to the jewler you bought it from and see if they will buff the scratches out.

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

I have a platinum e-ring and this is how the jeweler explained it to me:

Platinum is the most DURABLE. When you see a dent or scratch in GOLD what has happened is that when you hit your ring, you have LOST some of the gold in your ring. With Platinum, you DO NOT LOSE the platinum when it is hit or scratched, but the platinum MOVES with the hit or scratch. It is still there, but it has just moved around. You never 'lose' any platinum when it is hit.

This is the contrast between gold and platinum that has been explained to me by the jeweler.

As for polishing, I am not certain of the process by which they remove the dents when it comes to platinum.

I know this was lengthy but I hope it helped someway, somehow

BriBri529 is correct

Gold bands will get thinner and lighter with time as they scratch. Platinum bands will remain the same and although they may scratch, they you'll never lose any of the platinum. I have a platinum engagement ring (to help hold my diamonds in place) and a white gold band (I'm wearing them on separate hands).

Re: BriBri529 is correct

I am looking at my plat. band right now. I have been wearing it off and on for 11 months and its is scratched but not dented. I usually wear it instead of my diamond band when I am doing work around the house etc. so it does get more abuse. Even with the scratches it still has a beautiful luster.

Re: BriBri529 is correct

ok, so I'm not the only one!

Yes, my band is definitely platinum, and it doesn't have huge dents, just some stratches....

I'll have them buffed out right before the wedding

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

I have a platinum wedding band, and it's been almost two years since I got married (still can't believe I'm on this site, but I love the whole wedding thing, still). And I also noticed that it has some scratches in it. Not too bad though. I'm planning on getting it polished or buffed on our 2nd anniversary. Still has its luster though!

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

dont panic its not the end of the world girls!!! i have a platinum e-ring and my father is a jeweler! YES! platinum does scratch and dent very easily so dont get nervous and start thinking that it isnt platinum...im pretty sure it is by the way you sounded! platinum is the purest metal you will get, although you will find that it scratches and dents it will last you twice as long than gold! the girl that responded and said that you dont lose any platinum like you would gold is absolutly correct! you go girl!!!! all you need to do is take it to your jeweler and have them polish it out...no harm done! trust me i clean my ring everyday at work and polish it once a month! one thing you might want to keep an eye out for is your center stone! if your head and prongs are platinum be very careful! when you hit it , it may cause the prongs to shift very easily which may loosen your stone so make sure you get it tightened! sorry this is sooo long but i wanted to help you out!!!! any questions at all just ask im sure i can answer them! good luck! also if you live near the bellmore area you can stop into our store and we will help you out! polarajewelers.com

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

Yeah my dad is a jeweler too and he told me the exact same thing that diamondgrl said. So don't worry about it girls! It's a metal just like gold and it will dent and scratch. But like diamondgrl said: it's the most durable.

Re: To those with platinum e-rings or w-bands

i also have a platinum ering. no dents at all but minor minor scratch every now & then (on the bottom). I take my ring 2x a year to my jeweler. I have my prongs checked and I have it polished & dipped in rhodium, even though it never needed it yet, i still did it and it looks like he did the day he proposed!
