To Tip or Not to Tip

Original post by Bridex100

I'm trying to tweak our budget.

From my understanding, we do not need to tip the baker, dj, photographer, and videographer.

However, we should tip the make up artist standard 15-20% beauty salon tip and all the people who are doing catering, right?

Why do we have to tip them when they already tack on a 18% service charge!???!??!

Please correct me if I am wrong in any of my assumptions.

So should I tip each individual waiter????

You should also tip the photo/video assistant.

You yourself do not need to tip each individual waiter. A lot of times at parties the people (your guests) at the table will leave a tip at the table or you (or as your Best man) could leave a few dollars on each table. It is entirely up to you. But as my fiance always reminds me it's always the Bridal attendant and the M'D who get tips, never the waiters unless the people at the tables leave tips.

Hope that helps!

I am grappling with this right now.... and here is what I am thinking:

I will tip the maitre d' - probably $500 - or about $3.50 per person.

I will tip the bridal attendant $75 - it would be more but I have hired a DOC.

I will tip the videographer $50 - he owns the company but I want to give a little extra.

I have two photographers - one will be with us for 10 hours - he will get $100 - the other will be with us for 5 hours, owns the company, so I will tip $50.

I will tip the flower delivery $25 - I am being charged a small delivery charge so I am not going crazy here.

I am probably going to tip the DOC $50 - just to give a little extra.

I will be tipping hair & makeup girls around 20%.

I will tip the DJ $75 -he also owns the company.

I have a 3 piece jazz bad playing for our ceremony (30 minutes) and 5 piece jazz band for CH (one hour) $100 in total.

We will also be tipping the head bartender - assuming he will share, the valet, and the bathroom attendant - but just token tips. I am not tipping every waiter/waitress - I have to assume the 20% gratuity is covering something.

Not sure about the minister - we paid his church directly so I think we should tip him something - but probably between $25 - $50.

And I think that is it - PHEW!

Re: To Tip or Not to Tip

good question... something we all have to look into!

One thing that comes to mind (and was briefly discussed above) is the 'service fee' vs 'gratuity fee'.

I know the 18-20% service fee at the reception hall is NOT a tip. It is the portion of the bill paying for the waiters salary. If there is an additional 15-20% 'gratuity fee', then the staff tip is included in the bill. Otherwise it isn't, and we have to tack it on...

As for who we tip.... limo / dj / hairdresser... I don't know thankfully, others do!
