I was curious to hear people's thoughts on this issue. We decided not to hire a videographer. Do you think it's worth it to have one? Why/why not? What is the best part of a wedding video? I'm curious. TY!!

While I do understand the value of a video, think about how many times you are actually going to watch it. My mom and aunt told me most people they know actually threw their away after awhile because it just sat and collected dust. And I guarantee you that most people will not want to watch it with you afterwards. Around a thousand dollars (or a lot more) for one tape/dvd that you'll watch less than 5-10 times? Not worth it in our book.
there are many other things that can cost $1,000 or even way more than that for your wedding that are either only used for a little bit or like flowers die, etc.
the ONLY things you still have after the wedding is pictures and video. even if you do only watch it a couple of times, that would still be something that really could not be replicated etc.
of course, its all a matter of personal preference and what each person puts more value on - i personally value having these permanent memories but i know that not everyone does.
Don't get me wrong, we do value things that will last after the wedding. That's why we're spending around 4K on a photographer. With our package we're getting around 800 prints. With so many prints it's just not worth it to us to get something we know we're not going to watch.

MY FH did not want a video. I sort of thought i would regret it because tghe day will pass so fast. We eneded up getting video but nothing fancy - I met with only one video vendor (without FH) and booked on teh spot.

We did not hire one and to be honest we did not regret it at all. We are happy with our decision!

I am SO GLAD we didnt spend money on that! We have like 5 different videos from family members and they caught EVERYTHING. Yeah its not edited but there are companies you can send it to to get it edited for much cheaper than you would have spent on a full video. Not worth it to me unless you have the money to splurge.

Definitely want video. I feel like I will be so busy, I will miss a lot and I want to have all the speeches, fun stuff on tape. Plus, I have a lot of elderly relatives and I really want to see them all happy at my wedding

Re: To Video or Not
Getting a video was one of the best decision we could've made. I knew from the beginning that I wanted one. I want to be able to see us exchanging vows and see us dancing as see how happy we were that day. It captures the day in a totally different way. A way that pictures cannot.
DH was totally against the video. He stomped his feet all the way to the office when we put the deposit down. But, on the night we got out video back we popped some popcorn and turned it on. Within 10 seconds, DH and I were balling!!! He yelled out 'THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FORCING ME TO GET THIS!!! This is unbelievable!!' From that moment on, we never regreted getting the video. For us, it was the perfect way to capture our day.
Additionally, it allowd us to see things that happend that day that we forgot (cause time goes by so fast) and we got to see some of our family members dancing and having a great time also.

Re: To Video or Not
For those of you planning on having a family member or friend record your ceremony .... I wanted to share that while we did hire a professional videographer, my Aunt's husband recorded our ceremony on video for us too.
And promised to send it to us as soon as they got home, so we'd have it to watch when we got home from the ceremony.
Turns out he recorded over everything with video of one of my other Aunt's dancing at the reception
You can't always rely on friends and family to do a job that you can pay someone else to do.

I was on the fence as well... I finally broke down and hired one. I did not want to be upset if I didnt so I figured I would just cover it. I know I will hardly watch it though. AHH idk. But thanks for the post it was an interesting one!

We chose to do video and I am so glad because the whole day was a blur. If you don't want an actual videographer, definitely ask someone to video at least the ceremony for you.

It is indeed personal choice, but I am glad I got one. I considered skipping the video but would have regretted it if I hadn't. I agree with the posters who are glad they got a video in that it was great to re-live the day, which goes by quickly.

Re: To Video or Not
I hate this kind of post. It makes me agitated and nervous. I feel like I can't decide if I'm making the right decision?
To me, other people's wedding videos use to be the biggest jokes to me. I used to think its so tacky.
Its seams that everyone that gets one though, doesn't regret it. And those that don't' get it, can care less.
So I don't know where I am. Because now they tell me, 'you need video, you are going to send it to family overseas'
Don't know what I'm going to do now... I rather spend the 2k on more flowers!!

Re: To Video or Not
I got 1300 proofs and love all my pics...but they didn't truly capture my DH crying as he read his own vows to me, or the cute side comments we made to each other during our ceremony...or make us laugh at my parents dancing to some crazy dance song that we didn't even realize they were actually on the floor for...it's moments like that you get in a video...
and with older parents my main reason for getting video was to have them caught on tape so that when they are no longer with me I can sit and watch them on one of the happiest days of my life...
the other great thing is being able to share your video with friends & family who weren't able to be there...
I was on the fence about getting video...and got the least expensive package but it was the best decision and am so glad i did!

Re: To Video or Not
a friend of mine got married recently, and the best Man gave the best speech EVER!!
Unfortunately, they did not have a videographer, so this amazing speech that had us all in tears was not recorded, so they'll NEVER be able to hear the words again and watch the Best Man's emotions as he spoke.
I tried recording it with my digital camera, but after 3 minutes my memory card was full, so only the first half of the speech was recorded...I suppose it's better than nothing, but still not the same.
I strongly recommend getting a videographer, but even if you don't want to hire a professional one, get a relative or friend to record some parts with a real videocamers.

Re: To Video or Not
we're not getting video. we spent a lot on a reputable photographer, and my brother is going to bring his digital camcorder so we can edit the it on the mac after. since we're paying ourselves, we just thought there were other things we could spend that $$ on.

Re: To Video or Not
You will want the videographer. Think in 20 years from now. Wouldnt you want to see the wedding? I know pictures are great but pics and video is even better.
Think of it this way, do you have video of yourself when you were a child? Dont you cherish them? And if you dont have videos, dont you wish you did?
If you dont want to spend too much, just have them shoot the ceremony and an hour or so of the reception.
I think you'll regret if you dont get it.

Re: To Video or Not
I know I will watch it often, if not all of it all the time but definately pieces of it often to remember and relive! But we are looking into a relaxed cut, perhaps in camera editing, just chapters to skip around with, no baby pictures, etc to make it more cost effective. Plus we are looking into film students!
