Toast Help
As my sister's MOH, I have to make a toast at the wedding. I originally wanted to do a parody of Joey Tribiani's 'giving and having' speech from friends, but I don't think everyone will get it. I told my sister I also wanted to make a toast at the rehearsal dinner and she said OK. Please let me know what you think. I really want some honest feedback on both of these:
Rehearsal Dinner:
On Saturday we will gather for a very joyous occasion. We are going to celebrate the special love that Donna and Patrick share. It’s a love based on giving and receiving. As well as having and sharing. And the love that they give and have is shared and received. And through this having and giving and sharing and receiving, we too can share and love and have and receive with these givers, lover, sharers, and receivers. When I think of the love that these two givers and receivers share, I can not help but envy the lifetime ahead of having and loving and giving and sharing.
For those of you who don’t know, those words were spoken by Joey Tribiani in an episode of Friends. But Joey, in all his hilarity, also said something else that is very true – “You guys are perfect for each other. Y'know, we look at you and-and we see you together and it just…it-it fits. Y'know? And you just know it's gonna last forever.”
Donna and Patrick, it seems funny to wish you a long and happy life together. Wishing is for things that are uncertain. I KNOW you two will always be there for eachother. I KNOW, we all KNOW, that for the rest of your lives, you will always love each other, bring happiness to each other, and share and spread that happiness with everyone you come in contact with.
Wedding Toast:
Wow. I’m going to try and keep this short and not get all emotional. There are so many people who wish to toast the happy couple, and I am so thrilled to be one of the people to get this honor. For those of you who don’t know me, I am Donna’s sister Joanna. This gorgeous lady is my other sister Florence, and we are delighted to be co-Maids of Honor on this special day.
Donna – today you sit next to me as the most beautiful bride I have ever seen. Seriously, you look simply stunning and amazing and I cannot believe how beautiful that little girl on all those table numbers grew up to be.
During these past few months, helping you with the planning, going to fittings, stuffing envelopes, picking out accessories, and all the other little things we go to do as sisters, I realized you are no longer just my sister. You are also a very dear friend.
Did you hear that mom, you were right – my sisters and I did grow up to be best friends. When we were children, my mother always used to tell us to be nice to eachother, because one day we would be best friends. At that time, we used to fight over such trivial things:
Who was breathing too loud, chewing like a cow, laughing too loud, touching me, looking at me, taking my stuff…..
The list goes on an on, and now we can laugh about them but 15 years ago things like this could send a house of 3 sisters into chaos. Whether we were hiding each other’s deodorant, breaking pinky fingers, or I was dragging you across the room by the feet while you held onto the bedspread and took my entire bed out the door….. While all of these things were going on my poor dad would sit there, as more and more hair fell out and tell us to knock it off. But throughout all the screaming, yelling, whining, and crying, my mom would smile and say “Be nice to eachother, one day you will be best friends”.
I’m happy to say that not only do I now have the sisters and best friend I have always dreamed of, but now I also have a wonderful brother as well to add to my amazing family.
So, to my sister and best friend Donna, and to my new brother Patrick, I give the following words of wisdom for a long and happy marriage:
Tip # 1 - There are 3 words that are extremely important in every relationship. Pat- be sure to remember this, they are 'You're right dear.'
Tip #2 – Again this might be for Patrick - If you're clever, you'll always have the last word. However, if you are very clever, you’ll never use it.
Tip #3 - The two secrets of a long lasting and happy marriage are a good sense of humor and a short memory!
On a more serious not, I ask you to take each day and cherish your time together. Love one another and stand together. Separately, you are two amazing and accomplished people, but together you are complete, and an example of true love. As you sit side by side through this roller coaster of life, remember to scream from the peaks, hold hands through the dips, laugh through the loops, and enjoy every twist and turn.
My greatest wish for the two of you is that through the years, your love for each other will deepen and grow. As you grow old together, and bring a family into this world, may you always remember to love and cherish each other and make time for yourselves together. And know that I’ll always be there to babysit!
I wish you the very best. My love to the both of you. Cheers to Donna and Patrick!
