toddler question

lately i've been taking care of my niece a lot - she's 13 months. at some times she gets SO frustrated .. i'm pretty sure it's because of teething but she gets scary! she gets tense and will get so mad for like 30 seconds. is there any way to calm her down or get her to not get so aggravated? and is this normal?

Re: toddler question

It might not be teething...frustration and anger in toddlerhood is often because the child does not know yet how to express themselves (verbally), or they cannot figure out how to make something work they way they want it to.

The best thing to do is have patience with them. Usually, this means that you have to 'ride out' the storm of their anger - just make sure they are safe and not going to hurt themselves! Then try to distract them with a different toy or favorite book or a favorite song. These bouts usually don't last long, but they are a natural part of toddlers learning and trying to assert their independence.
