Am new here; do you think its too early to start planning for a May 2010 wedding? The date is flexible ...maybe May, June or July.
How soon did everyone start planning? Did you use planner or just diy?
thanks!!!

You're lucky you have so much time! You can really get some good planning done and save a lot of money for your big day. I basically only gave myself 6 months to plan and that's NOT a lot of time, but definitely doable for somebody like me (a true New Yorker - always in a rush. lol)
If i were you, i'd definitely start doing my homework. Checking different style gowns, looking at halls, that kinda stuff. But you probably don't need to book or buy anything just yet (esp the dress, since styles change each year and your size might too).
Good luck with everything. And congrats!!

definitely not too early. you can start to figure out what you like and don't like which is huge. there were often points in my planning where I would say 'if I only had more time...'
good luck and don't stress too much!

You can try to get some of the 'Big' things done, like booking the reception hall, photographer/videographer, dj/band
but I strongly recommend taking some time to shop around for these things, meet with different vendors, get a feel for what you're really looking for before you book them.
A lot of vendors will tell you that you need to book early because they may not be available for your day, and while that is true, in the NYC/LI area there are SOOOOOOOOOO many options that you're sure to find someone else who can do exactly what you want for the same or better price.
I got engaged Memorial Day weekend (late May/early June) 2007 and my wedding is November 2008...that's 18 months and I personally feel that that is plenty of time. In fact, right around 12-14 months after getting engaged, I was pretty much done with all the major things and told my FH that I was tired of planning and wish the wedding could be over with already.
So, pace yourself...everyone is different and their circumstances are different, but if you get EVERYTHING done too far in advance you may just find yourself bored.
This is, of course, just my opinion, and others may not agree with it...you are free to do whatever you want.

the sooner the better. I would recommend to start looking at catering halls and vendors like photographers/videographers since you have plenty of time your better chances of getting the photographer you want taking pics at your wedding. The photographer I wanted had already been booked with more than a year in advance... so start planning NOW!

I'm September 2010 and I'm not far off from booking my hall. The rest I will book within the next 6-9 months.
You've got plenty of time, take advantage of it. You can lock in this years prices for many of your vendors as well. A lot of places are increaing next years in price
Not to mention, gives you plenty of time to save up & get the $$ together.

Never too early! You will now have plenty of time to find out what choices can be made that are particular to your season, and then find them on clearance either now or in Spring '09!

If I had a May 2010 wedding, (And I always like to be ahead of the game if I can!), I'd book the venue and then for the rest of everything else, would cut out pictures and start a binder or folder of:
1. Flowers I like 2. Cakes I like 3. Possible Wedding Gowns 4. Possible Bridesmaids Gown 5. Wedding Rings 6. Hair and Make-up styles I like
And then I think that's good for now - it'll come in very handy later!
HTH!

My wedding is in January 2010 and I have all my vendors booked. I got some amazing deals because I booked early and got locked into the 2008 pricing. I would at least book the hall. Don't forget your looking for prime season and those dates go quick!

Welcome and Congratulations!!! It's never too early!! If I were you, I'd book the ceremony and reception venue. You can wait to start on the other vendors, but I'd at least set a date!

it's never too early to start planning such a big day in your life. Look at it this way, you can really take the time to find the things that you want and enjoy and save money doing it

I got engaged in November of 2006. By December of 2006, I already had my church and hall booked.
So, no I don't think it is too early!

not too early at all, you'll have your pick of dates instead of trying to figure out which days the RH's have available. Start off with approximating how many guests you'll have and how much you'd like to spend per head. Also consider which night (or day) you'd like to have your wedding. Keep in mind saturday nights are the most desirable but also the most expensive. Then look at the halls, this website has a great guide of RH's, here is the link:
