I was dress shopping yesterday and saw something I liked at RK Bridal and it was a really good price. My wedding isnt until May 2010. Is it too soon to buy something? What if I lose like 10-20 pounds? Won't that be a ton of alterations??? Advice???

I think now is a good time. Unless you feel like you're going to change your mind. But they can always bring in the dress and alter it.

A lot of brides buy their gowns about a year in advance. I will be getting measured for mine next month and my wedding is June 2010. It also depends on the designer. My designer takes 9-10 months for the dress to come in. Others take less.
But if you feel that you're going to lose 10-20 pounds, you might want to wait. The consultant where I'm ordering my gown said 5 pounds isn't really an issue for alterations. But anything over 7 could put you in a different dress size. I know when I lost almost 50 pounds 2 years ago, I lost a pant size with just about every 10 pounds.

Well first of all I would say buy something you that you really LOVE not just really like.
Secondly, a lot of dresses/designers can take up to 9 months to come in - so its definitely not too early. I bought my dress the first week of Jan for my December wedding.
I asked about the weight loss as well and they told me that they can take it in about 5 sizes without it being problem. I have lost about 10-15 already and want to drop another 10, so I hope they are right!
If you really love the dress, then I say go ahead and get it!

im getting married the day before you, started shopping beginning of april, found a dress i ABSOLUTELY LOVED!!!!!!!!! and i ordered it on April 25...
so now is not too early!! :)

If you love it, get it! I would also ask the shop how long its going to take to get your dress in. If its going to take 9 months, Id order it now, if its 2 weeks, then maybe you can wait a little.
If you are set on loosing the weight Id order a size smaller...

Not at all! I ordered mine this past March/April and I am also getting married May 2010. My dress won't be in until about November, and I know I will have about 3 fittings - so definitely not too early to order...

It's not to soon, especially if you see something that you really like! I ordered my dress in September of 08 and my wedding is after yours. Just make sure you really love it and will not change your mind once you make the purchase

At this point its not too soon. I bought my dress in January and am getting married in October.
So dont sweat it. If you LOVE it, but it.
If you loose weight jump for joy at the money you spend on alterations :) It is what it is.

I bought my dress last July...14 months before the wedding! I dont think its too early to buy something, just make sure you love it so you don't doubt it for a year.

My wedding is Feb. 2010 I bought my dress in Aug. 2008 it just came in last mth. make sure its the dress you love and that you can not stop thinking of

Just be careful, search around on here. There are a lot of girls who talk about 'dress regret' because they ordered too soon. If you do order it, don't let yourself look at any other dresses thereafter.

Losing weight after they order the dress is not that big of a deal. Kleinfeld's told me they can take in the dresses up to about 5 sizes. So you should be in the clear with the 10 to 20 pounds you want to lose.

I say if you have a very defined, sure idea of what you want to look like on your wedding day, and that gown fits that, it's not too early to buy. Is it a sample you are buying? Is that why you're worried about losing weight and alterations? If so, a good seamstress an alter the dress for you even if you lose 20 lbs. If you are ordering the dress, order the size you feel most comfortable ordering. Just be careful to order something tooooo small in hopes of losing weight ,because it is much harder to let gowns out than to take them in. I personally had a very very defined idea of my gown, found my gown online, tried it on first (then a bunch of other gowns too!) and came back to that one gown. I ordered it then, about 10 months before my wedding. The only reason I would say wait, is if you are still wanting to see new dresses, or new seasons of dresses. Remember, new fall dresses will be out soon, if not already out, so some people wait for that. If you are sure this is THE ONE, then go for it! A year is not too early if you are sure of your vision/look!
