while I am VERY sad that all of you had to experience these things...i was only looking for stories pertaining to significant others...perhaps we're too young (or just all extremely fortunate) to have yet gone through something terrible happening to the health of our significant others...

Re: Has anyone...
I watched my aunt die of lung cancer, but it was a long battle--over 2 years--so it wasn't one event. It was heartbreaking.

Re: Has anyone...
Yes, my DH last year came down with a terrible illness. He couldn't go to work or do anything....we almost had to cancel the wedding. We went to over 30 doctors and no one had any answers.
It was just awful watching him suffer. We were also so scared that this could be life threatening or permanently debilitating....b/c doctors couldn't tell us anything.
Well, ends up one doctor decided to try some meds. even though we didnt know the root cause of his symtoms. The meds helped...he is back at work and we were married in May, however he is still symptomatic with some worse days.
We are still going to doctors and the Mayo clinic is our next stop. ____________________________________ I also watched my dad die of sudden stroke at 51. He was a great health...it was devastating!!!

Re: Has anyone...
I watched 3 older relatives die, but not suddenly die, they were each sick for about a year.
I saw my brother after he was stabbed, but it wasn't super-serious (he was stabbed in the arm); still, it freaked me out.

Re: Has anyone...
I watched my father lose his battle with pancreatic cancer. He was in home hospice care for part of it and I had to act as his nurse. I got way too much of an education in that regard.

you are right, Shana.. Alzheimer's really is such a hard thing to be witness to...
My grandmother is in the early stages of Alzheimer's, and she lives in Florida so I don't get to see her much (she couldn't even make it to our wedding , which broke my heart ) I talk to her as much as I can over the phone .. but I worry that because I don't see her often, she is going to forget me and my brother really quickly.
The selfish part of me , though, does not want to be closeby when she totally forgets who we are ... I think that'll be too difficult to see first hand

Re:
In 1998, my cousin overdosed on a combination of drugs. I was in college at the time and I had to come home because they thought he wasn't going to make it. In the end, he survived, but he now has to stay in a living assisted environment and has virtually no short-term memory. It's very, very sad. He's only a few months older than I am and has practically zero quality of life. It was definitely a lesson to learn.

Many to you! You are a very strong woman and I truly hope they get to the root of your DH's medical problems
