I am thinking about going back to school for nursing... I am deciding between the part time night program that will take a few years, or the ful time day program that wilol only take 1 year. Obviously I would love to do the full time one and be done in only one year but I have to see if we will be able to afford the house with me not working full time for 1 year... So if you would all please tell me how much your bills are every month, not including Mortgage, insurance, tax or car insurance/payments. I want to know the total of water, electric, gas, oil, tv, internet, phone, lawn care, everything like that. I know everyone will be different but I just want to see the average. Thanks

Re: Total monthly Bills
I would say our total monthly bills are close to $4000....that's including our mortgage.

Re: Total monthly Bills
So funny Julz, I JUST asked 2 of my LI homeowner friends that question last night! the problem is that there are SO many variables.
For example, how big is the house - your gas/oil bill will depend on that. Do you have the super cable option with satellite and a DSL connection or do you just have basic cable with a dial-up? Do you buy groceries and eat light, or go to restaurants every night? Those things make a big difference.
But both my friends gave me an approximate estimate of close to $1000 (not including mortgage or car related stuff).

Re: Total monthly Bills
I will try and give you a breakdown (excluding mortgage, taxes, & insurance) of what we pay, these are an average of what we have paid since we moved here in March:
Monthly LIPA (electric) = $65 (although last month was $105, which I was surprised about) Phone = $65 DSL = $35 Direct TV = $66
Every 3 months Water = $7

Re: Total monthly Bills
I know there are so many variables! We will have both gas and oil so I'm not sure how that will work. I was hoping everything would be $1000 or less

Re: Total monthly Bills
It's definitely hard to tell. Last year in our old house we had 3 months during the winter that our heat was $386 and LIPA $128.... it was very expensive!!
Depends on the weather, type of heating, age of home (insulation/leaky windows etc.), CAC or wall units...
Water for me is $23-35 every 3 months Cable (includes phone, Modem) $170 ADT (alarm) $30 month
I am drawing a blank! Can you imagine??

Re: Total monthly Bills
just to let you know i just started in the nursing program at farmingdale and i was accepted into the nassau university program where if i sign up for 2 years after school they pay your full tuition including books and uniform..you don't even have to work for them you would just have to pay them back but you'll be making more as a nurse so a few thousand dollar loan to not work there will be fine..its a 2 year program and i go in the evenings..i wanted to do the 1 year at stonybrook but i just didn't feel safe enough with the co op to stop working..i would have hated to have to quit in the middle if the bills couldn't get paid..think about it..i'm enjoying the program and it will go quick..
just so you know..we got the cable internet and phone all through optimum and it is 98 a month for all three..we haven't gotten electrical yet though and we don't pay water or heat..good luck with your choice

Re: Total monthly Bills
On top of all the monthly expenses be sure you have a nest egg of at least $3000 - $5000 for emergencies, ie: major car expenses/car replacement, replacement of major appliances - stove, refrigerator, etc., exterminator - should you find infestations, cesspool replacement, roof damage/leaking, chimney repairs, furnace or heating system repair or replacement. Just a few ideas of some of the unexpected things that can pop up that might need immediate attention. You want to be sure your income is such that should you need to use that nest egg you can replenish it within a few months too.

Re: Total monthly Bills
Thanks Karen! Right now we have 6 months of mortgage saved up in our house fund, plus whatever presents we get from the wedding.

Re: Total monthly Bills
We own a small 3 bedroom ranch. These are our bills:
I read the post about having emergency money. How I WISH we could save that much. When we got married, we took half of the gifts we got. The other half helped with a down payment on our house. We didn't save much of that money as we had expenses and we made very little, I mean VERY little when we got married (almost 11 1/2 years ago). Since we are paying $220/week right now for childcare, it is very hard to save anything. I always wonder how people like Suze Orman who tell you to save 8 months worth of salary expect families with children to do that. If anyone has some advice on that, I would love to have it-lol! I am very good at budgeting money but can never figure out how other people 'seem' to have so much more money. Maybe that is it, they just 'seem' to have more-??!!

Re: Total monthly Bills
I don't know but my last LIPA bill was over $400. Gas for the dryer is probably about $200 every three months.
Our last Slomins oil bill was $380. Water is under $50 I think every other month. Cable (including internet) is about $100, phone is $75.
