totally frustrating

DH and I went to look at neighborhoods in NJ yesterday.. everything that is close to the city and affordable is 'eh'... in Hoboken you can only get 600 square feet for 300k so that is out!!!
We don't want to stay in Jersey City b/c we are sick of the punks around here (a few months ago so of the local youth were throwing rocks at me when I was walking home.. so it isn't safe)....

we'll be renting forever.

tell me about it...

we are heading further out in jersey and put in offers for townhouses...my parents saw them this weekend, and the one we like looks like it may have water damage

i thought you'd enjoy this it mentions Jersey City

we are in hoboken, and buying is out of the question for us here...i feel your pain!

Re: totally frustrating

we looked at Maplewood yesterday.
It got written up as a great, affordable place to live, and it looks OK but I don't know if I'm 100% thrilled with the town.
the nice parts are very expensive but there is an 'up and coming section' that is rather affordable.... you just take your chance with the neighbors and it's a little too close to comfort for me to newark and irvington

I was interested in Maplewood as it was quoted as being the 'Park Slope of the burbs', however I agree with your assessment...

I live in Essex County and I agree that the center of town near the village is really nice but I don't think you can get anything for under $500,000. The areas that border Irvington are not as nice.

I know someone who went from an apt on the upper west side to a house in Maplewood and was not thrilled, but I think it had more to do with home ownership and the mandatory car ownership. The town may be a contributing factor.

What about Weehawken?

Re: totally frustrating

i have friends that moved there recently- and they love it but there block is 'in transition'
real estate speak for going from crap to nice.
another thing is the homes are very old- built in 1928 and needs LOTS of work

we are going to look there- as well as Fort Lee, West New York, Nutley & Belleville.
