emo is short for EMOtional.
as in over emotional.

the music is usually about breakups and heartache
the lead singer USED to have sound like a whiney 13 year old girl, but now that's not so important, the lyrics are.

the look is about tight pants, black hair, and eyeliner for both boys and girls.

emo is becoming 'hardcore' now... which leads us to emocore ... which is emo music, with harder beats, and combines the emo look with the goth/metal look

I used to right for the subculture section of a magazine and ezine.

I agree this is becoming very popular right now. It seems the big trend with this group is 'cutting', which is incredibly annoying to us therapists!!! If you are going to cut at least mean it, don't do it to fit in with a group! (In no means trying to offend anyone, just frustrated with all these little teenage emo's whose parents make them come to therapy as they are now cutting their wrists due to the social trend).

what kind of therapist are you?

Urban Dictionary Definition

there is actually a really good definition on there that explains where emo originated... however that is no longer what emo is or means.
lol
things have changed a lot since the 90's and while i give the person who wrote that definition a lot of props... they should hop in their time machine and come back to 2007

cutting has been the 'in thing' with groups for decades. 10 years ago therapists were saying the same thing about Goth kids.

it might not be due to the social trend... perhaps they are involved with the depressing social trend b/c they are not happy. cutting is like a drug. you hang out with a bunch of potheads when you're depressed and there's a change you'll start smoking pot to feel better too... same goes for cutting, people tell you it helps... and you try it and cant stop.

i am not trying to argue with you, or anything like that, and i'm not offended really, i just don't want people who are unaware of what the emo scene is associating cutting with it so casually.

I'm not saying that people didn't cut in the past, I'm saying that with the rise of this group, there has been an increase in cutting, not cutting for suicidal/mental health/depression/self-soothing reasons, but for the social reasons. If you cut that's fine, just don't do it to because you think it's cool. We have people referred to our agency all the time for the social reasons, and it seems most often related to this particular group of people. Not to be taken offensively, just from a cognitive behavioral therapist point of view, who works with teenagers everyday.

I knew what you meant... I'm just saying that they said the same thing 10 years ago, that there was a rise in social cutting due to the Goth scene.
I wrote a thesis on cutting, I'm not trying to discredit you or anything like that, it just seems that people are more aware of it now than they used to be, as opposed to more people DOING it.... you know?

And I am by no ways identified with the Emo scene lol so i'm not trying to defend the kids or the movement or whatever...

I just think that society as a whole needs to realize that kids have been cutting for years, for whatever reason, and that these kids/teens/adults need to be helped, not judged.

that's all. it wasnt a dig at you.

Um, okay. Don’t want to get into a debate here, but it just kinda unnerves me when I see therapists make jokes about hurting or killing yourself. I had a forensic psychology teacher once who worked at a prison where an inmate had killed himself—and she just made some ridiculous and, in my opinion, offensive comments.

wow you have no idea what you're talking about. emo is very misunderstood nowadays. people think music like my chemical romance, fall out boy, etc is emo but its not. thats pop punk. emo is emotional hardcore. its not really around anymore, just everyone uses that name when the music out these days ARENT emo. if i were to name a bunch of bands, no one would have ANY idea who they. and the cutting thing? thats always been around. it was usually the 'goth' kids that did it. the 'emo' kids have grown up by now.
