This weekend I went to my inlaw's house and my SIL said in front of the entire family, 'Are you going to name your son Joseph the fourth?' My DH is a third and I have absolutely no interest in naming my son the 4th. I thought it was rude for my SIL to ask me this in front of my MIL and FIL, especially considering I'm not even pregnant! LOL! What would you do? I feel so guilty for breaking family tradition and my DH is wishy-woshy about it, but for G*d's Sake -- he's not a freaking king! When will it end? It's like movie sequels ... they have to end sometime! Plus, I really don't like his middle name. Opinions?

Ha! That king line was funny! I am a third and believe me there is not going to be a fourth!! The paperwork mistakes through motor vehicles and various other bills and what not that get mixed up between my father and myself is enough to drive a man crazy. It is not so bad now that we have different permanent addresses but when I was at home the two of us were interchangable on paper...until they read the birthdate!!
This happens to Joe (DH) and Joe (FIL) all the time. We even get their bills. (Hi, we have enough of our own, thanks! )

tell them if they like the name so much to have more kids them self...in my family i was expeted to name my little girl after my grandmother ( well first letter of her name), but i did'nt and after a few months they all forgot...anyway people have to relize that it's your life and just to keep quite...but i dont think they ment any harm
Id jjst tell them you'll choose it when the time comes...and do NOT name your baby based on pressure form anyone else. you CAn of course name a future son Joseph, but only do it because YOU want to, not to avoid conflict. It's your son, and just because they continued the name, that was thier choice and it doesn't mean you have to. Also, it seems like you DOn't want to continue the namme, but you're converned about problems and your FH/DH. I'm sure you and FH/DH can come up with a name you both like.

Wow, tht was rude and waaaaaaay out of line- even if you were pregnant.
Tell her to name her kid Jospeh the 4th if she likes it so much.
My father's side (who I do not speak to at all) does this, there are only 5 names spilt among all the men. I personally do not like this, and would not do this just for 'tradition's sake.' Start a new tradition, come up with your own name

Ugh, this is going to be a problem for me too. My FH was named after his father, but his father doesn't even go by that name, but a variation instead. FH wants if we have boy in future to be named after him. I don't want this! It's annoying. Why do men feel the need to give their son their name? It's so stupid.

First off -that is way wrong of her - and you can just tell her - that you and your FH havent decided on names because there is no urgent need to considering there is no baby to name - and when the little one comes around - she'll find out the name that was chosen.
About the name thing -
cant you always name your son after your husband but change the middle name - and therefore he isnt the 4th? Isnt that how it works? That way you are still respecting the tradition - just with a twist

This is an important issue you can use. My friend's father's credit was practically destroyed because of her brother and his bad credit debts. Some companies just looked at the name only.

IT MUST END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I honestly don't get the whole 'I want my son/daughter to have my name' WHY??? I Thank- God that my husband didn't want a JR. There are a zillion guys names John.
Though I will admit my son is named after his 2 grandfathers. But, that was to honor our Dads. My father was a Joseph but we used my maiden name instead!

That's what I did say....I said, 'We haven't really picked out baby names yet -- I guess we'll talk about that when I'm pregnant.' But seriously -- would you carry on the family tradition to prevent a family war or name your child something that came from your heart? I feel like I'd be hurting my DH too as much as he won't admit it.
My Mother had a different name in mind for my sister. But, was kind of talked into naming her after her Mother. (My Nana was VERY demanding) It killed my mother to no end that she gave in. So, if you really don't like it. Stand strong!!

That is kinda rude of your SIL. My DH is also the third, and I told him straight up there isn't going to be a 4th. He agreed!

Re: Tough Situation -- Opinions Needed
You could always say you were thinking of n naming a son after someone else in DH's family and maybe there's a name in DH's family that is not Joseph that you woudl like....that way there is someone you are still naming the child after yet it's not Joseph.
Or you can say 'well my father was hoping I'd name a son after him'.
Or you can do it and then call him by his 2nd name as to not confuse him with all the other Josephs in the family!
Either way, it's not worth it to talk about it now, since you're not pregnant! LOL
