Is it necessary to have one if we know where we want to go? How much do they typically charge?
It makes me a little nervous planning such a big trip on our own... but I don't know if it's worth it if we can just book it ourselves...
I've never used one before so I don't really know their purpose or what they are about..

Re: Travel Agencies?
Fh and I usually book all of our travel ourselves. Fh travels to Europe and the Caribbean a lot for work and we always plan the trips...we have not had a problem yet.

Re: Travel Agencies?
sometimes they can get cheaper prices through their wholesalers. i ended up getting my own flight bc my TA's were a lot more expensive, but now i'm booking hotel, and she's getting better deals than i am for the luxury properties we're considering.
FM me if you want her info.

Re: Travel Agencies?
We went to a travel agency and it seemed like we had researched where we wanted to go and knew way more about the destination than the travel agent. Then I heard about Travel Tom and called him and he was so knowledgable and his prices were great so we used him!

Re: Travel Agencies?
We went to a travel agent and she got us a better price for our honeymoon than we could find ourselves. This was the only time I have ever gone to one, but she did find us a good deal. WE didnt get charged anything I think she makes commission. not sure tho

you don't pay a fee for a travel agent - they get a commission. Most of the time, I've gotten better deals through a travel agent but it depends on where I'm going. If I'm doing a smallish trip like FL - I book it myself. For Europe, I usually use the TA since they usually get a better rate - at least on hotels.
For my HM I used my travel agent for the hotels ad inter-island flights. I used miles for the flights to and from and I booked those myself.
Most TA's don't get commission anymore on airfares.
