I’m just posting this because I hope it helps someone and possibly saves them some money becuase I was sure clueless about this, and I used to be a frequent traveler/flyer…
I knew that some airlines started to charge if your bag weighed over a certain amount, and being a chronic overpacker, I was never nabbed with this, and I used to fly a lot in college and after. Anyway, on the way out at JFK Airport my bag was over the weight limit. So we had to pay $25.
On the way back I knew my bag would be over again, so I wanted to make sure DH’s bag wasn’t over, so we put more stuff in my bag (it was a big bag) Well, we get to the airport and my bag wasn’t just over, it was over over, and they wanted to charge us more than $100!!! So the lady suggested that we spread out the stuff in the bags… so they we are in the middle of Cancun airport, with a line out the door, (people were nearly missing flights) and the lady is having us open our bags to redistribute the weight. So here is the big tip: apparently, they would rather you check in TWO bags at 50lbs each, then ONE bag at 100 lbs …
this makes no sense to me because isn’t having two bags on the flight more work for them in the long run?? So I guess buying the super big bag that was in our luggage set was a waste of money…. I hope this helps someone… by the way, did you know they now charge for snack packs… you get only a drink and not even peanuts!

Re: Travel Tip: What I learned on our honeymoon
This happened to us too on our last trip and I just paid the extra 80$. I was like... why is it ok for TWO bags that equal the SAME AMOUNT as the one to go aboard.
I seriously don't understand airlines anymore.
They're all screwed up IMO.

wow. I've never gone over...and i pack a lot. I can't imagine how full your bag was! pretty insane though, although I've seen them make people open wrapped gifts in their checked luggage, so i put nothing past the airlines.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that they do this! So when we're packing at home, how do we know when we've reached the weight limit?

Most of the time the weight restrictions are either printed on your tickets and ALL are readily available on the Airline sites. As the other girls said, just put your luggage on the scale.
I suspect they are enforcing the weight rules more simply because the baggage handlers are getting injured more. Even with a 'heavy' tag on a bag, I could see how a handler (or for those with crazy heavy, large bags) or HANDLERS plural could get injured trying to pick it up.
Times, they are a changin' ladies.

Re: Travel Tip: What I learned on our honeymoon
I want to see if I can find this info on American Airline's website, see what their official policy is. I have a bathroom scale, we could probably just weigh the bags on there, no?
We were planning on checking two bags and carrying on two bags. That's a good tip though, bringing an extra bag for souvenirs and such.
I wonder how many carryon they allow and the size restrictions for it?
