I have read great reviews about Travel Tom here and figure I will give it a shot. I contacted him and loved his attitude He was very polite, accomodating...over all ...very nice. I was a little dissapointed (and worry) that he is not located in NY but in Washington DC. but I figure I will overlook that fact since he has great reviews. Why not? It is worth a shot So, I contacted him after doing tons of research online. My FH and I are very savy when it comes down to booking vacations, so we did plenty of research before we contacted him. Unfortunately, every time we gave him the go ahead to give us a quote on a honeymoon destination, his quote surpassed expedia and other sites quotes by more than a thousand dollars I do understand that he will honor any price given by a reputable online traveling site, but I was in shock that he could not come up with that price by himself after I read so many great things about him. The last chat I had with him was on Saturday. After I told him what Expedia quoted me on ...he was like...that is not possible and I was like...yes!!! I am on the site right now. I will e-mail you the quote Then he was like....well my vendors are not available right now, but I will get back to you on Monday. Don't get me wrong, I am pretty sure he did great for some of you, but I can't help to feel dissapointed. This was the 3rd time this happened in as many weeks. FH was very dissapointed

Re: A little dissapointed with Travel Tom
I'm sorry to hear that you are having a not so pleasent experience with Travel Tom. We booked our St. Lucia honeymoon with him and he was awesome. Keep in mind that when you book with Travel Tom you have the AMEX cancellation and insurance policy along with the peace of mind that you can talk to Tom anytime. Where are you planning to go?

I am sorry, my experience with Tom himself has been very pleasant, just a little dissapointed with the quotes. We will still book through him, but I just want to make everyone aware to do their own research and look for prices before booking anything with any travel agent. They will match prices, but be aware that their prices are not always the best.
But travel Tom has been great as far as personality and patience.

Sorry to hear that. We were going to use a TA that tons of teachers I work with use. The quote she gave me was right off the Sandels website. I thought she could do better then that so we just booked it our selves! Good luck!

Re: Travel Tom
I know a lot of girls had a great experience with him, but I did not. In fact, I hear his name and I go
That's not to say he didn't do great by the girls who rave about him, or won't do great for other girls, but he's not the end all be all of travel agents.
I wish other TA's got as much attention on this site as he does, b/c I'm sure it'd save quite a few people a lot of money, if I had spoken to Tom first I would have thought it was a great quote and I would have been wrong.
I'm not a TA or associated with one, but I my travel agent saved me $1000 more than Tom would have and would be glad to refer you to her.

Re: Travel Tom
sorry to hear the not so good experience. where are you traveling to?
I did notice sometimes when i looked at something on tripadvisor or other sites they would sometimes be cheaper but i think they were just estimates based on travelers' ratings. plus you also have to factor in time of year, b/c some of my hotels were about $200 cheaper a night for all the days I'm in europe from oct 1 to the end of the HM b/c it's the start of the lower season.
I think a TA is just like any other vendor. you will get quotes that are towards all ends of the spectrum and maybe even different from 2 ppl from the same office
I've heard great reviews about AMEX travel agents re the value and protection on the vacation. I had issues with liberty trvl and another TA so can't recommend them, but FH swears by liberty trvl.
The one I'm using for Greece/Turkey is Homeric Tours. I used them b/c they specialized in my destination. Just made everything so easy when booking the hotels b/c the TA has been to all of them! it came out to 12K+ but we also have the problem with the $$ exchange so we expected it.
Good luck

Re: Travel Tom
I contacted Travel Tom 3 weeks ago, and he never contacted me until the morning of the day FH and I were going to meet with Liberty Travel for our honeymoon booking (this was 1 week ago). His email was pleasant, and he apologized for not contacting me sooner because he was away on business and my email was overlooked. This definitely didn't make me feel good about working with him...sure he's busy, but so am I, and I don't want to have to contact a vendor over and over again.
Well, in the meantime, FH and I did a lot of research, found a good price on the AMEX travel website by ourselves, took that quote to Liberty Travel and the quote was matched.
So, as great as Travel Tom is, he is not without his flaws.

Re: Travel Tom
I myself have not booked my honeymoon yet. However, I inquired on the vendor board and was contacted by a travel agent who is a vendor on here. I did not book yet bc i am still doing research, however I feel her prices were extremely reasonable. In addition (which is soooooo important) she was so nice, so quick to respond, and so helpful. She gave me many different quotes on different hotels and helped me compare which would give me most for my money. We have been going back and forth via e-mail and she is always more than happy to answer all the questions I have.
If anyone wants her info., FM me and I will share.

Re: Travel Tom
Hi girls!
Just wanted to shed some light on this, I am also a TA and have been in the business for years!
i can promise you that we as TA's work very hard with our hotel, airlines, etc to offer you the best rate BUT sometimes the internet rates cant be beat.
HOWEVER, the catch to this is the fact that we are well versed and have most likely been to many of the places that you want to go--i can tell you what restaurants to eat in, where the best shopping is, what day trips you should NOT waste your money on etc--you dont get that level of service from the internet.
Also, a perfect ex: my husbands friends were planning a guys ski weekend to Vail (all single guys) who wanted girls and a party--well they got a quote from the internet, and brought it to me. I called them back to tell them that it was Gay pride week in Vail at that time--so the list of eligible women were going to be far and few between! You would NOT have learned that on the internet!
Im happy to help any of you out--just ask :)

Re: Travel Tom
i had a similar issue.. the flight tickets he quoted us was about a 1000 more.. but then FH and him spoke over the phone.. not sure what happened, but we decided to book our own flights.. and he took care of the accommodations and stuff..
so maybe you can do something like that?? also, he tends to push certain locations more.. and our HM is to Europe..
anyway.. go with the best price.. jmo..

LoL That's a really good point. If it were different locations or a different week in my case I would have been able to understand, but in my case he was quoting me more than the Resort's Website, and more for the same seats on the same flight. it was just odd.
The point about the internet though, RIGHT ON. That's the reason I like using Travel Agents, b/c they know that kind of stuff, special weeks, days, off season, on season the surrounding area.... unless you're going somewhere that you KNOW, at least talking to a TA is a great idea.

I agree with all of the above, however....trip advisor has never steered us wrong. We travel quite a bit and have always done plenty of research. We have learned through trip advisor and other chat rooms where some events are taking place, etc. You can always also contact the hotel before hand and ask them of any events taking place around the area. I agree that by asking a TA is easier and you get a quicker answer, however, it is not something you can't find out yourself with the proper research methods. Also, not all TA's will tell you about activities like the one explained above before hand. You might be one of the exeptions to the rule, but I have used TA's before and that has not been the case. I found out of such activities through trip advisor reviews and by contacting people who have been at such places. As far as places to visit and to see, or not to go to....you are on your honeymoon.....how much sight seeing are you going to do? besides...you can find out the information with the proper research.
