Re: tri county engagement ring
Diamond District here in Manhattan might be his best bet. For $1,000 - 2,000 - it will probably be just under 1/2 carat in white gold. Often a platinum setting can be about $800 just itself (without the stone). One carat costs about 8,000 for a very good quality stone. You can get a carat for $5500 for one with OK cut and clarity (probably has flourescense and is a fancy shape - heart or marquis because those are much less expensive.) If anyone offers you a round one ct diamond for less than $5500 - you should hesitate. 1/2 or 1/3 carat in white gold should be possible for that price though.

Mine is from Tri-County. There are some Shady Jewlers and some good ones. You just have to be careful!

I get all my jewelry from Gabriel Jewelry Booth #R25. I did not get my engagement ring from him but I did get my wedding band and he is awesome and so are his prices.
FM me for more details.

Re: tri county engagement ring
I got my e-ring in manhattan, but FH ende dup spending a lot there, and you may get a better deal at Tri-County.. I'd be wary fo tri-county. MAKE SURE ANY RING YOU GET IS CERTIFIED. You can get a ring for that price, but you have to sacrifice one of more of the 4c's. Tell the person to research it online... and decide what's important. I think Color is probably the most important. Anything lower than F/G starts to look yellow..and the obvious thing you can cut is size. Cut and clarity can have to do with dimesnions on a marquis cut, and also how much 'fire' the ring throws..same with clarity although in the higher grades, you can't tell w/the naked eye, so you can get a mid grade there. PLEASE make sure your gem is certified no matter where you get it. We first looked at Zales and they had all of this G color stuff, but it was really inexpensive and the settings WERE pretty...Then we decided to go to aplce where we know MANY couples have gotten e-rings that appraised for thousands more than what was paid. Some jewelers don't even carry certified stones. Be careful!
If you have any Q's, FM me, I'm really big on the diamond buying thing. I went out and knew exactly what I wanted...and that's the most important thing.
Edited: b/c I am stupid and what i said came out all wrong.. SORRY!

No, I just meant that you may be looking for something different and I don't know if my place would have the same thing you're looking for! I don't know why I said that. it made sense at the time. I wasn't trying to be disparaging at all. The rest of my message clearly shows that I'm not trying to look down on anyone at all... I meant that maybe tri-county would give you a better deal, but I'd definitely make sure it was certified first...I meant it more like, FH spent a ton of money, maybe u can do better @ tri=county, but here's a warning... I'm sorry..I'm stupid...I really didn't mean it the way it sounded.
ETA: I didn't make any comments about what I thought about the price, also. My comment WAS directed at places and diamond buying in general.

Re: tri county engagement ring
I did all the research on my engagement ring and diamond wedding band before he bought it. Samsbride is right on target with her information from all that I learned. Platinum is alot of $. You are better off investing your money in the diamond and getting a white gold band.

Yeah...you'd porbably not want to invest 1/2 of the money in a platinum band. They also have mixed white gold and platinum settings! I think if I could change I would have gotten that. My ring was scratched the 2nd day I had it!

47th street!! Best deals because of competition.
My FI bought the rock and the platinum separately, that also helps out with the cost.
I can recomend many guys in the business.

You can get great quality rings that have a color less than G, but do not go past I. A stone in an 'I' color will only start to look 'yellowish' when it is larger than 1-1.5 carats. Most diamond jewelry that is in stores is of the G, H and I color.

Re: tri county engagement ring
Zales had a lot of G color. It was nice. The cool thing about Zales is that they are recognized, they are a huge compnay so I'd trust them, and they ahve these days when you can upgrade your ring for a discount...it's pretty neat. We liked the salesman and the program, and I actually picked the type of setting I wanted there, but it wasn't the palce for us.
Also, I don't think specialty cut diamonds are necessarily cheaper. They weren't in my experience!

Re: tri county engagement ring
be careful w/ the flea markets. there are many reputable brick and mortor diamond dealers out there. no matter where they go, make sure to tell them to get an AGS or GIA certified stone. EGL is not as good, but the stone are at least certified. before purchasing, the stone can be sent to an independent appraiser for verfication.
ETA: i did a search for you on pricescope.com (round $1000-2000)
