Troubles with FMIL/FSIL (VERY long)

Troubles with FMIL/FSIL (VERY long)

I am a frequent LIW user but I am under an assumed name in fear of snoopers.

I need your advice. Here is the story:

In the beginning of October I sent an e-mail to my BP informing them of the dress I chose and the cost of the dress, hair, and makeup. The reason why I did this is to keep everyone informed and because most of my girls are going through different things in their lives right now and they don’t have that much money. I figured everyone could budget ahead, since the wedding is about a year away.

So I sent this e-mail and my FSIL says to my FH that I sounded like a 'bi*ch' in the e-mail and I am 'ridiculous' for send an e-mail so far in advance. So, fast forward to me having dinner over FIL's house with FH and FMIL. FH tells his mother that he would like her to talk to his sister because she is complaining about everything related to the wedding.

The start of this conversation leads to WWIII. In my e-mail I told my girls that I am not going to insist that they get their makeup done because I know how expensive everything adds up to be. FMIL ACCUSES me of saying 'I MUST INSIST that you get your makeup done'...which I did NOT say. (FSIL forwarded the e-mail to FMIL and FFIL)

The long of the short is that FMIL told FH and I that we are going to end up living all by ourselves somewhere because we are 'pushing the family away'. She ends up leaving the house, I print the e-mail and give it to FH, and I leave. He later shows it to FMIL and says that she is wrong. FMIL then accuses me of changing the e-mail before I printed it because that is not what she is saying the original e-mail says. She goes on to say that MY MOTHER and I are too controlling and we have not allowed FH to be involved in the wedding planning. WHICH IS TOTALLY BS!!! My mother doesn’t know any more than FMIL does BUT my mom is helping us pay..so I do inform her of what is going on. BUT she doesn’t really have any say in what’s going on.

So basically FMIL accused me of hurting FSIL's feelings, breaking up the family, and being too controlling. She says that I have 'changed' and she is mad about things that she has no business being mad about. For example- she is made that ordered my dress about a year and a half before the wedding. WHAT DOES SHE CARE!!??

So my problem is that I KNOW that I'm not getting an apology from FMIL. I haven’t been to FMIL's house in almost a month. NOW, FH is getting mad that I am going over to his house and he has to come to mine all the time (We live with our parents until the wedding). FH understands that I am mad but he wants to “be the bigger person”

I need your advice. How would you handle the situation? Would you go over there? Would you want to talk to FMIL about the things she said??

PS--FMIL has now acted as if nothing happened

ETA: MY mom is helping us pay, NOT FMIL

*************************************************************

So I went to FH's house this evening because he asked me to. I said hello and FMIL responsed with a 'hello'. That was all she said....the whole time I was there.

So I asked FH if FMIL knows that I am upset. he said yes, he told her earlier this week. Apparently she is mad that I am upset now. Also, FH and I went to our hall a few days ago and FMIL thought she was coming. FH told me that now she is mad that she wasnt asked to come with us. FH told her 'well, you said you dont want to be a part of the planning, so why would I ask you to come with us??' FMIL has been there with us 2 times already. We wanted to go alone. It was the first time we went back alone since we looked at the place.

Errrggg....she frustrates me because it seems like I can't do anything right in her eyes. She insulted me and hurt my feelings and now SHE is mad at ME....shouldnt it be the other way around???

I really don't know. That sounds a lot like my in law situation. FSIL twists things and tells everyone her distorted version, everyone believes her despite evidence to the cotnrary, FH and I get accused of pushing the family away. I don't even know how to deal with my own in laws, so I don't have advice but..

FMIL is probably acting like nothing has happened because she realizes she was wrong.

I went through a similar situation with some of my BMs. They thought I was being b!tchy in my emails, but I expressed to my MOH that I really had no one to talk to about certain things. And I felt like I wasn't getting much help from anyone at the time because my requests were falling on deaf ears.

I would talk with FMIL and FSIL at the same time. Explain to them that you realize being in a wedding is a financial burden and that you are trying to make things easier.

As for your FMIL questioning about ordering your dress in advance, my FMIL did the same exact thing!!! She questioned why was I searching for a dress in June when my wedding is in April. When I informed her that some dresses can take up to a year to come in, she didn't say another word. And mind you they are not paying for anything, my parents paid for half of my dress!!

As hard as it may be, I would try to resolve this as soon as possible. And them saying FH is not involved in planning might be due to something FH said to them. I would have a talk with him to make sure this is not the case.

This is a hard situation to be in....so first

You could do one of two things:

1. Act like it never happened and go over FH's house and talk to FMIL like nothing is wrong.

2. Talk to FSIL about how you 'hurt her feelings', since this all seems to have started b/c of something she said to FMIL and FH. I would do this face to face and ask FH to be there or at least close by so you have a witness in case she try's to twist any of your words around. Ask to meet her for coffee or something so it will be neutral territory.

Hopefully this all works out for the best! Good luck!

First off, I'm sorry that you have to go through something like this during what is supposed to be the happiest time in your life. It sounds like your FMIL has some unresolved issues regarding a)her son growing up and getting married b) possible unhappiness in her own life c)feeling the need to defend FH's sister for whatever reason. When people are unhappy, they often project their own feelings onto someone else and insist that the other person has a problem, not them. It's ridiculous that she would stoop to that level and hurt not only, but your FH in the process. I am all for being the 'bigger person' but in this case, you are owed an apology. If you really feel you won't get it and that you want to keep the peace, I would start making small appearances at FIL's house but always keep the conversation to a miminum. If talking about the wedding to FMIL causes her to act like this, I would answer her questions politely and let anything she says go in one ear and out the other. As difficult as it sounds, in your position, I would make a real effort to let go of any anger you have toward FMIL/FSIL because if you don't, then they are having a small victory over you by making you miserable. JMHO.

I'd talk to FSIL and tell you are sorry that things have gotten out of hand and ask if she has any solutions. People are good about bi***ing, but can't come up with anything better. Ask her if she feels pressured to be a BM. Maybe she doesn't want to do it and this could give her an out. Do it diplomatically, so it doesn't sound like you're telling her not to be a BM. Do it with FH there. In fact, I think FH should be the one asking the questions.

Give FMIL the rehearsal dinner to chew on. That will give her something to do.

It sounds to me like your FSIL is deliberately trying to cause problems. After all, she altered your email to say something you didn't. Is she single or married? Is she jealous?

For right now, I would go to FMIL house and play nice. If she wants to pretend nothing happened, you can also do the same. To avoid any further miscommunications, I would CC FMIL on emails to the girls, so that your FSIL can't manipulate the situation again.

In the alternative, you can go over there, and explain that you haven't been by because what she said about breaking up the family was very hurtful, and you decided to stay away and allow the air to be cleared, and allow everyone to get some perspective on the situation.

In the end, you have to do what is comfortable for you, and what you and FH can live with. I don't envy you. Good luck and !

1. It sounds like your FSIL is trying to cause trouble. Even if she thought that about the email she should have voiced her concerns to you and not her mother.

2. What does your FMIL care when you ordered your dress. She's not the one paying for it.

3. I would go over the house...there's no reason why you should let this make your relationsship with FH more difficult or complicated. If they want to waste their energy on such bull then let them. Just be cordial. And I'd have a talk with FSIL...but be careful what you say...she may run back to FMIL again and twist words.

Sorry you're dealing with this...sounds like they are just bitter

So sorry about these issues. Seems like FSIL could be a bit jealous of the attention your getting? She probably didn't think it would escalate to this level. It is a little ridiculous though that FMIL accused you of changing the e-mail, pleeeze. I would go and act like nothing happened.

Well, FSIL has made it VERY clear that she does not want to be in the wedding. FH talked to her about it and she said that he HAS to do it because FMIL/FFIL want her to. I told FMIL during WWIII that she does not have to do it, as did FH. FMIL said that she SHOULD do it becuase she is FH's siser. I feel like if she dosent want to do it then she shouldnt and save herself, me, and everyone else the aggrivation

dont let her stop you from going there to see your FH. Im sure in a twisted way it satisfies her. You will most likely run into 'different opinions' in the next few months, so all i can say is stay strong, try not to let it get the best of you, and ignore the people that are turning a happy occasion into a sad one.
This is YOUR wedding and as long as you and your FH are happy with your choices, then screw everyone else.
Good Luck!
