Trunk Show Question

I have never been to one so bare with me. When there is a trunk show does that mean its kind of like a sample sale and you choose off of a rack and try on. Then buy that same gown or do they have a 'new' gown in the back somewhere. And must you buy on the spot?
Curious cause I was thinking about going to the Demetrios trunk show.
