Okay, I'm a size 10-12... let's err on the side of 12 for the sake of argument here.
Will I *actually* be able to try on the gowns when I go to look? I've heard they stock them in a size '10' which is really about a size 6.
Where do people go to try on gowns if they are over a size 6...?
FWIW, I'm in Lynbrook and much prefer places in Nassau County. (I work long hours + commute to the city, so it's not always easy to get out east) I'm also not looking at insanely expensive gowns either - $2k and under. (preferably $1500 and under...)
I'm considering at least looking at David's Bridal... Anywhere else?
ETF wording.

Davids is great for trying on any size but being I was a size 16 when I started looking at gowns, got married as a size 12, back to a size 14 after marriage (ekk). You can try on gowns anyway, they may not close fully in the back, but they clip you in.

From my experience the only place that had different sizes was David's Bridal. The other places only had size 10-12 as samples. If the dress is too small they have this clip things they put on. You basically just get an idea of what the dress would look like. Its not perfiect, but it works out.

Re: trying on bridal gowns
i'm a plus size----18. (not ashamed to say it!) and i'm quite short. so trying on dresses was gonna be quite an ordeal in my mind.
i found that just being HONEST about your feelings on dresses helps a lot. i literally walked into my dress shop and said 'Listen, I know I'm fat, my jeans know I'm fat, my mirror knows I'm fat, the whole world knows it....but if you make me FEEL like a fat person.....well you're gonna have a plus sized girl CRYING in your presence'
they laughed with me and said they understood. then they proceeded to find dresses for me that i would be able to try on. most of the time the dress was tight---and couldn't be closed in the back and such......BUT the sales people used clips and held it together for me so i could see how it would fit in MY size...and it helped me out so much.
you will find dreses to try on--but remember that they may not be a perfect fit. if you get great salespeople, they will make all the difference in the world.

It's all about the way your weight is proportioned. My pants are a size twelve but I have a small midsection and a large chest (my bra size is a 32D). For the most part, I was able to try on dresses with no problems. At worst, once they got up to my chest, I had to either really smush it in or they just clipped it to my bra. I think you should be ok.

Thanks, girls!
It doesn't have to be a perfect fit -- It's good to know that I'll at least be able to get the idea of what it would look like without feeling like a sausage!

You'll be fine - David's is a perfect place to start with - especially with the variety of sizes and styles! Of course if you try a dress that doesn't fit you they will just pin it closed, no big deal.
Good Luck!

You might want to try RK Bridal in the city. They have a large selection of gowns in different sizes to try on. They also have a large selection in your price range. It's also really convenient for fittings when if you work in NYC.

I second RK. They are great!!! Not only do they have larger sizes, but so much to choose from and in different price ranges. I'm a size 10 but I wasn't ashamed to ask my girl to get me the larger dresses. I wanted them to close and then use the clips instead of getting the dress too small. For one particular dress I went back and forth between trying the plus one and the smaller one. If you're in the city, definately give RK a try (they're on 39th Street between 8th & 9th). You won't be dissapointed. Weekdays it's so quiet. As long as you get there before 6pm and sign in, you can try even more than 7 dresses if you so choose. You'll be done by 7pm as they close at that time. Go to their website and start looking and printing out dresses you think you make like. that will help so much.
Good luck in your search.

Go to Lillettes in Baldwin. They have a great selection, nice staff and all their new dresses are in a size 14. You won't have a problem trying on stuff there.

I was a large 12 when I went shopping and I fit into most of the dresses but I cheated since they were corset backs

Re: trying on bridal gowns
there is a place called gowns by louise in the bronx. I am going there this weekend. She said they carry all different sizes so every girl can try on the dresses. You should check them out if you can. And they have a huge selection.

It depends on where you go. I'm a 16 and I was able to get most of the dresses over my big a$$ hips without destryoing them

Re: trying on bridal gowns
Kara, I think when I was in Macy's Bridal Salon by Demetrios, they had sizes 10 and larger sizes in another area. I am not really sure. I would call them before you go there, if you are intereseted in Demetrios gowns. Just so you know, my wedding dress cost was $1350 but i got it for like $1100 b/c it was a trunk show.
Good luck and happy dress shopping. It's so much fun!!
