Okay, I'm a size 10-12... let's err on the side of 12 for the sake of argument here.
Will I *actually* be able to try on the gowns when I go to look? I've heard they stock them in a size '10' which is really about a size 6.
Where do people go to try on gowns if they are over a size 6...?
FWIW, I'm in Lynbrook and much prefer places in Nassau County. (I work long hours + commute to the city, so it's not always easy to get out east) I'm also not looking at insanely expensive gowns either - $2k and under. (preferably $1500 and under...)
I'm considering at least looking at David's Bridal... Anywhere else?
ETF wording.

Re: trying on bridal gowns
I'm the same size as you, 10 or 12 on a bday day. Most dress samples are 10,12, &14's, but the 14 fits more like a 10. Dress sizes always run a little smaller. It is doubtful that you will be able to fully zip every dress you try on, but they clip you to perfection so you can see how it will look. Try to say away from a side zip, it will be very hard to get an idea on a side zip.
Try Lilettes in Baldwin, they have a ton of gowns a lot in the 1500 and under range too. I even tried on some there that were 800-900 and they are beautiful. Make an appointment Geri. She is SUPER sweet and SOOO helpful. She makes you feel really comfy too! They are open until 9 on Tuesday and Thursday and Geri is there both those nights.

Re: trying on bridal gowns
have you considered henry roth, mon cherie couture and moonlight gowns... their in your price range... I too recommend lynbrook bridal.. for henry roth you'll have to go to kleinfeld.. but the others you'll find at lilletes and other nearby salons... but no matter where you go, check out phyllis at gownfind.com to see if you can get a better price.
