Soooo FH has been wanting to get a Tungsten wedding band. He is obsessed with the fact that they will never scratch and he can wear it to play sports and what not. However, we have recently been told that Tungsten rings will turn black over time? Is that true? And we have also been hearing that the can never be resized because this type of metal cannot be cut, so if there is ever an accident they will need to cut his finger off! REALLY?! This sounds like risky business buying one of these rings! What do you ladies think? any of your FHs have/plan to get Tungsten rings?

I also heard they cannot be resized, but never heard of them tarnishing like that. Did a jeweler tell you that?

I don't know much about them turning black. But I bought FH a Tungsten band a few years back. The woman who sold it to us said the whole deal of how it can never be cut, and if he works in construction its not recommended, blah, blah, blah. Anyways, while at work FH droped it on a titled floor and the thing cracked in half. 'The unbreakable metal' isn't so unbreakable. Something to consider. We tell this story to every place we are searching for bands at and only one has said to us before we even mentioned anything that they are unbreakable expect if you drop it on title.

Re: Tungsten Rings
I never heard of Tungsten tarnishing ... but yes, the 'cut off your finger' thing is very true. This is a super strong metal - we couldn't even engrave our rings
Also you can see them cut it off on youtube if you search it
Well, that's good to know ... I'm not so scared about it anymore ...
IKWYM I had to check before FH picked his out

Re: Tungsten Rings
Haven't hear about tarnishing but they're SO much cheaper than gold (especially with the cost of gold going up). If it tarnishes, he can always get a new one. I think FH's was $200 (well tech $0 because we had a $200 coupon!!!), so if he loses it or need another one, its not that bad.

Re: Tungsten Rings
Tungsten will break and crack with enough force. You can't cut it off but you can break it off. You just have to be able to do it yourself because I don't think a lot of people in EMS and the ER know this. It shouldn't tarnish, but you have to be sure it's not bound with cobalt and and is instead bound with nickle. I think the cobalt binder tarnishes. Titanium Kay has a lot and they are really cheap, much cheaper than the jewelry stores. They do laser engraving which comes out much clearer on tungsten than the regular kind, and they never charged me extra for shipping when we had to exchange sizes.

Thank you so much!!!

Re: Tungsten Rings
I got FH a tungsten ring. It was the only ring that he really loved and they are very reasonably priced. He works construction and is in the fire department. I am not really concerned about it being an issue.
