Victoria Ruvolo, the Lake Ronkonkoma woman who was critically injured after a turkey was thrown though her windshield, has left the intensive care unit and is able to get out of bed with some help, the family's attorney said Friday.

'She's still a bit disoriented,' said Paul Feuer, a Patchogue attorney. 'The family is trying to keep her in a sedated atmosphere.'

Ruvolo, 44, has been making steady progress since the turkey sailed through her windshield and smashed her face while she was driving in Lake Ronkonkoma on Nov. 13. Ryan Cushing, of Huntington, who allegedly tossed the turkey out the window of a moving car, and five other teenagers have been charged in the incident.

As the defendants spent Thanksgiving weekend at home, Ruvolo, the youngest of seven siblings, received family members in her hospital room. She is being fed through a tube because her jaw is wired shut.

'We're a close family. If we were in the same state we always spent the holidays together,' said Joseph Ruvolo, 63, the eldest of the woman's siblings, in a telephone interview from his Sorrento, Fla., home.

But this year was different.

'They didn't really have much of a Thanksgiving because they were worried about Vicky,' he said. '... This was uncalled for. She didn't deserve this.'

I am glad to hear that she is on the mend and doing better!!!

I am so happy to hear she is on the mend. I still don't understand what would possess someone to do that. I hope those kids, specifically the ringleader, pay dearly and don't just get the slap on the wrist that the courts are known to give!!

this poor woman...i feel so bad, imainge the years of emotional turmoil she still has to endrue..i am glad to hear she is doing better....with so many people out there who could use the turkey for good use (like, eating!) its a shame to waste it hurting another person.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, because they are kids they probably won't be punished as they should. Remember the Mepham football team incident. Those ringleaders brutally sodimized those kids and not one of them went to jail... instead a detention center and they proabably won't have records. They must start sending a message that this is not ok.

BTW, I teach high school and would freak if anyone of my students did such a thing.
