Does the groom need to wear white to match the bride, or could he wear the bridal party color like the groomsman and just have a white tie???

I would have him either wear the white/ivory for both vest and tie or just match the rest of the guys with the colors. The colored vest with the white tie might look odd.

He can wear whatever he wants...or whatever you want him to wear LOL! I made FH's tux white vest white tie with a stripe pattern but it's all white. I know FH likes white but I was thinking of changing the vest to black like the GM and have FH wear a white tie...still have to fig that one out lol

I wouldn't have him wear what the groomsmen are wearing, he should be different to some level-I don't think it necessarily has to be white (is your dress white? ivory?)
If this helps, my fh is wearing a pink burberry tie, which is a few shades deeper than my dress which is a pale blush pink-so it corresponds without being matchy. His guys are doing pewter burberry ties..hopefully
