We are having an outdoor ceremony at Lands End on a Saturday afternoon, then the following day, we are having a small ceremony (only our parents will be present) in church--just a reaffirmation of our vows and a blessing, really.
The deacon at the Church asked us to bring him a marriage license. I said that we already will be legally married on Saturday and offered to bring him a copy of the one signed by the Saturday officiant, so he has something for his records to prove that we're not being shady with the legal stuff. He said he still has to file a marriage license for us with the State. But then we'd have two licenses filed for us-- two anniversaries, etc. Can that really be legal? Can you be on the books as getting m arried twice-- even if it is to the same man?
Having two sets of paperwork out there makes me nervous. I feel like something is going to get messed up. Has anyone ever experienced/heard about something like this?

Re: two marriage licenses?
yeah it is a bit confusing... my husband and I got married 4 years ago in civil ceremony, now this year we are planning a church wedding... what the priest told us to get is a license for church purposes, it looks a little bit different and it is valid for 2 months from the date it was issued, it is issued only for new your state for example... in our case it will state that we were previously married to each other, so the church knows that we are free to get married in church... I know weird stuff but thats how it works

Re: two marriage licenses?
okay we're having 2 ceremonies also.
we're getting married in vegas on 05.05.05.. with just our parents and sisters basically and we're getting the license from there.
on 05.22.05 we're having the jewish ceremony and everyone will be there..since we're already married we can't get married again, you can't have 2 marriage licenses. we have to show the rabbi the proof (our vegas license) and then we'll sign the ketubah which is the jewish marriage license. however legally we'll be married with the vegas license and the jewish ceremony is kind of like a renewal of vows.
unless your guy knows something we don't know you can't file for two marriage licenses because you can't be married twice at once. so it should be that the second marriage is kind of just a renewel ceremony (meaning no signing of the license)
i think i confused myself here.. so i'm sorry if i just confused you more.. i was trying to help.. i swear!

Re: two marriage licenses?
We are facing the same issue. We were married 7 years ago in a civil service and are renewing our vows in church this june. our church also told us we need a new license. How do you get this license for church purposes only? That's sounds like the best idea so far. I don't trust asking the state to issue a new one entirely. WIll they know what this is? I feel like there has to be someone who has already done this. I'm so glad you posted this

Re: two marriage licenses?
you go to the same county clerk office where you got your first marriage license and just ask for new marriage license for church purposes... I wish I had a scanner I would show you what it looks like... I will try to take a picture of it with my digital camera and post it for you, but I am at work now, I will try to do it tonight...

Re: two marriage licenses?
I went over this with the deacon also. The state and the church hold different records therefore they need too records. The church calls it a convoluted marriage when you are remarried at any point to the same person. When I was younger I got married in city hall and then had to have another license to get married in church. Now that we are divorced I have to have the church marriage anulled even though I have papers from the state saying we are not longer married. Church can be more political than the state sometimes. I think you will really have to just go by the date you want to.

Re: two marriage licenses?
We were married on a cruise ship in Florida so going to same office where we got first license is out of question, but I will ask clerk here for the license you indicated.
