UGH!

UGH!

My year long internship at a psychiatric hospital ended on Friday. I should be happy but I am not. I now have promised myself that I will start my dissertation (I am getting my PhD in clinical psychology) today. I wrote in my calendar what I want to accomplish every day on this project up until my wedding. But I can't motivate myself. Any ideas? Help...as soon as I complete my dissertation I get my PhD.

Why not allow yourself one day to veg out. You know when you're hungry and you pile your plate high with food just to find that you don't have the room to finish it all..... don't overwork yourself. You got a lot going on.

Good advice...but it won't be just one day. I would turn it into the next six weeks.

Re: UGH!

It took me about 2 months to write my PhD dissertation. My first piece of advice would be to set realistic goals. You are not going to get that thing done in a week. You are going to have days where it's the last thing in the world you want to deal with. Instead of taking a complete break and dragging the process out longer, do some of the mindless tasks like formatting citations or resizing graphs and photos.

Second, get the easiest parts done with first. For me, it was the materials and methods section, followed closely by the introduction. Getting those sections done did wonders for my motivation - I was so proud of myself! It gave me the energy and confidence to continue with the more difficult sections.

Third, realize that this is the culmination of years of work, and that not many people enjoy the privilege and honor of writing a PhD dissertation. Yes, it's a pain in the a$$ but it's a big accomplishment.

Congrats on being so close to finishing - the light at the end of the tunnel must be really bright!

On my honors thesis in college (not a dissertation by any means, but it was 120-150 pages), I made myself write 10-15 pages a day. I would not sleep until I finished. I would not do anything until I finished. Discipline is hard, especially with so many distractions.

thanks for the advice. I am starting the introduction. Then I will do the method. I can't write anything else until the method is approved and I conduct the study.
