I have been dealing with this forever! You really need to find out what is triggering it, and avoid those foods. Chocolate, coffee, anything red (tomatoes, peppers,)oh, and anything with bubbles is deadly beer setlzer. Also dairy can sometimes make it worse. I find that avoiding triggers, and taking an acid reducer can help. The target brand is the same as pepcid or zantag, works great.

good luck !!

I have LOTS of advice on this but won't blab it all here. I have a huge list of foods I can't eat and am on meds but what REALLY helped was my chiropractor who actually adjusted my hiatal hernia and after three treatments I barely ever have problems and while I still take my medicine I have been eating all my problem foods (except caffeine) and am so much better finally!
FM if you want more info on foods, etc

yesi have this problem too. I have a heital hernia in my stomach which adds to it. I've been taking Prevacid which for me has worked the best out of all the diff meds. If you're under alot of stress it tends to be worse and take longer to go away. I totally can feel your pain in this situation

I have suffered with both for years and I agree the chiropractor has been amazing. I also have to watch everything I eat. You also have to remember Nexium is a maintenance drug and is not a quick fix. Something like prevacid would work better. Hope you feel better soon!

Eating celery or drinking 8 ounces of water with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar works really well for me... It sounds gross but it works

See now, when I went back to Gastro he told me to take the Nexium 'As needed'. I originally was taking it everyday but he told me to stop and only take it when I feel I need it. Most days I don't feel anything, but when I do, it's really bad.

I double checked with FH who is a drug rep for the competition. He said that many doctors tell patients that to ween them off the drug since most people don't use it forever. He said Nexium is a PPI drug and has repairative properties that put it in this classification. Most indications are that they be taken regularly (daily or every other day) because they are time released and do not necessarily work right away like a quick fix drug (Pepcid). He did say that a doctor might tell you to take it as needed when you feel symptoms but that it should be taken for a few days and that it doesn't usually work as quickly (as Pepcid). My doctor tried to ween me off and had me take it every other day and I felt like I was dying (even on the reflux diet). Reflux patients are supposed to be scoped annually so that might help. I know how horrible and scary reflux attacks are. I got misdiagnosed with athsma because it got so bad I couldn't breathe at times. I feel your pain!
Had to edit because it is early and I can't seem to type properly :)

Yep, your FH is completely right, Nexium is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) meaning that the only way you could take it as need would be to take it 30 minutes before your first meal of a day you know you will be eating junk (I take it holiday or anniversary mornings), but it and other PPIs (Protonix, Prevacid, Prilosec) won't work on symptoms as well once they happen. You need an H2 blocker like Zantac if you only get GERD every once in while.

I was reading a recent article that apple cidar vinegar can work in patients with mild GERD, so if it works for you go for it.

You can also lay off chocolate, caffeine, ciggs, acidy and oily foods to prevent this.

2010 bride here:

everyone in my family suffers from acid reflux or at least they thought they did. some times u can get the same exact pain from not having enough acid. we all started adding lemon juice to our water & it produces a miracle. my sister was the worst so she used to eat a slice of lemon. a lot of doctors miss diagnose this.
