I just went looking through our kitchen junk drawers to see if I have any coupons in there, and there are DROPPINGS all inside. Like, covering my take-out menus, my screwdriver, my Lenox cake knife I got as a gift for the wedding... OMG OMG, I'm gonna throw up. So I check out the other drawers and cabinets, and it's all clear except for under the sink where our garbage can is. Where it's worse than the junk drawer. Which, by the way, is waist-height and directly above the cabinet where we keep our pots and pans. I can't figure out how (or why - there's no food) something could have been in there for SO LONG as to leave that much of a mess.
I am so grossed out right now and FH is a big squeamish baby so I'm gonna have to take care of this. I just needed to complain to someone, sorry!

What do I even DO?
I mean, I'll scrub everything down but... what else? I already checked all the cabinets where we keep food and they're all above the sink and totally clean. What else should I be looking for?
I don't know if I can buy traps or anything... I'm a vegetarian! I won't even eat a turkey sandwich; I don't see how I could crush to death a living thing in my home.

mouse traps with reeses pieces cups on them. the exterminator told us this. we had the same problem when we moved into our new house, we had to seal up different spots throughout the house and my dad also bought these noise maker things that people cant hear and they go into the outlets. we havent had any since
eta: you can prob get humane traps

Oh i have SO been there. when I lived in midtown i caught FOUR mice
i came home one night and went to make a sandwich and there was a corner chewed out of the bread; I got pissed and thought 'FH is such a pig! I can't believe he took a bite out of the bread and put it back!!!' Until I saw the plastic was chewed through.... I almost threw up.
are you in an apartment? check for holes!! very important - that's how they were getting in. Also it's nice of you to not want to kill them... they do have those humane traps but I wanted every one of those little m-f$ckers DEAD. I had nightmares about it crawling in my hair (like Carrie in SATC) b/c i lived in a studio at the time.
ugh, it's the worst!

Re: Ugh! Eeew! Eeew! Eeew!
omg i dont even know where to begin - a few months ago FH and i caught 5 mice in our apartment!!!! and we ended up setting one free because i just couldnt deal with all the dead mice....
our apartment is immaculate - we are in the basement apartment and FHs parents live upstairs in the first floor apartment - their house is also immaculate....the problem is that behind us there are fields/woods and because we live in townhouses the mice can travel back and forth between all the houses on the block....i found mouse poop on our kitchen counter and freaked - turns out he was going in our stove - we took the stove apart and there was droppings inside the range! it was so gross. FHs dad is an exterminator so he knew where to look and how to catch them.....for now BLEACH EVERYTHING!! it took us awhile to catch the mice - we had never imagined there was 5 of them! i felt so bad because the mice were really cute one mouse was so hard to catch and when we finally did we set him free - he would set off the traps but never get caught - so we had to use the glue traps - one night i was home alone, i heard the trap go off - i thought we finally got him - i checked and no mouse in the trap - but he ran onto the sticky trap and was stuck....watching him try to get off was the most horrible thing i ever saw - i was so upset - as soon as FH got home we used olive oil to get him off and we set him free....
we also think our dog caught may have caught one of the mice!! BARF!!!!
it ***** because of the field behind us and the crappy construction - these houses are only 5 years old but they were built like $h!T all holes, so many places for the mice to get inside and they go from one house to another - i was so embarrased because i am a cleaning fanatic and i was like people are going to think we are dirty that we had mice in here! i actually took pics of them to send mom in florida because i couldnt believe how big they were - yeah im sick, i took pics of dead mice

Uh-oh. Not good!
I know you are a vegetarian but it will be very hard to catch these suckers unless you use poison and traps. My parents had them and and the traps didnt even work so they had to call the exterminator who laid poision. The poision makes them dehydrated and they leave your house and flee for water....then you can block the holes where they got in (if you can find them).

Re: Ugh! Eeew! Eeew! Eeew!
We had a mouse a few months ago and we knew he existed but FH was the first one to make an actual sighting. I locked myself in the bedroom and FH was out in the living room with his hockey stick (what he thought he was going to do with that is beyond me). Anyway he screamed like a little girl any time the thing went near him and I had to come in and try to take care of it. We put down a few traps but he was never caught but he did enjoy the peanut butter cups in the trap (that was a tip)

I found this for you...
If a vegan had a mouse in their house? how would you deal with it? What about a spider, or what if your house was infested with termites. What would you do about these things?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker Someone asked this yesterday, so I'll reproduce the answer I gave then.
Before I do though, yesterday's question didn't include spiders. Spiders don't hurt anyone, so I leave them alone.
Being a vegan means you do what you can and all you can to minimise your contribution to animal suffering and exploitation; it doesn't mean you sacrifice your own health or safety - allowing animals to endanger your health and safety and that of your family, particularly your children, is not vegan it is irresponsible and stupid.
Though a dilemma, because you don't want to harm life, it is essential to rid your house of rodents and other pests if you have an infestation.
Unfortunately mice don't come into the house singly - they move in en masse and breed very quickly - so catching them singly and putting them outside isn't really a practical option.
If taken outside they will soon find their way back in anyway.
There is no point in being sentimental about mice and rats - they are a huge health hazard and a danger when in your home. A danger because they need to gnaw constantly and will present a very real fire risk by gnawing on electric cables. A health risk because they spread disease - they are there for your food and will contaminate that; mice urinate and defecate constantly and that will be spread around wherever they go. Each female mouse can have 5 - 10 litters per year of up to 13 young each time; each of the new born mice will be able to breed at about 7 weeks. Do the maths and see how quickly the population will increase – you’ll never catch them all.
A better option is to try and prevent pests coming in. You can get a plug-in device that emits a noise inaudible to humans but intolerable to rodents and to other pests like cockroaches; make sure your kitchen is squeaky clean, with no food scraps or crumbs to tempt them in; and try to block up any holes or gaps where rodents might get in - bearing in mind that if you can get a ball point pen into a hole, a mouse can get through it. They tend to stay away if you have a cat, too.
If having tried all the above you still get an infestation you have a responsibility to deal with it properly. Your health and safety and that of your family comes first.
I'm vegan and I would call in the exterminators if precautions failed - just as I would defend myself against any creature - animal or human - that was threatening my health, safety or life 2 weeks ago

i was upset - the mice we caught were not sceevy yucky looking mice - they looked like the mice you see in a pet store, white under bellies, brown furry backs, cute big ears - i did not expect them to be so cute - so that made it even worse for me since i wanted to keep them as pets - but i had to remember that they can carry diseases and make us sick - snap traps were quick - but even my FH felt bad killing them....we joke b/c the first mouse we killed on ash wed and we killed more on my bday which was a few days later and we killed a whole family of them! but its better than us getting sick from them so we did what we had to do....i think the sticky traps are really cruel - at least with the snap trap its over quick for them
