I went to look at some dresses today - just wanted to get an idea of what I look best in, AND I wanted to see some light/airy options because I am having a destination wedding.
I went to Commack Wedding Center (just to look) because I'm local, and let me tell you, what a bad experience. The women questioned my age (I'm 22, but look young) and said I was too young to get married . Then ANOTHER woman asked me if 'I was SURE I'm the bride' because I have no e-ring...THEN they told me that I'm the 'worst size to try on wedding dresses' because I'm toooooo big for the sz 10 samples and too small for the sz 20 samples.
I've never felt so fat. I'm never bigger than a 10 or 12 dress in real life, and I could barely zipper the ONE sz 16 dress they had!!!
Then I headed downstairs to the bridesmaid section (to look for a dress that comes in white), and I already know that i will be finding a bridesmaids dress in white instead of a 'wedding gown', because I like the simpler styles and there's more variety for a light/airy dress. The women down there weren't much better....
Very disappointed in my 'first dress search day' :(

Re: Ugh i feel so gross
First, dont let one bad experience get you down!
People who question your age- take it as a compliment- one day you will love it( I feel your pain)
Dont stress about the sizes because bridal gowns tend to run small meaning you need a big size- there was a thread on it somewhere and the majority of the girls had to get a bigger size-myself included
you can find beautiful yet simple wedding gowns! and no matter what you will be beautiful!
Try other shops- I highly suggest Adrienne's in Islip- they were friendly- helpful- had every kind of dress imagineable and it was a wonderful experience for me!
Smile! It's your day and you cant let unprofessional people get you down!

OMG how rude of them!!! If it makes you feel any better, there was a thread floating around about others who were getting dresses in much larger sizes than normal. You really cant go by the sizes because each manufacturer is diff. Hopefully youll have a much better experience else where.

Re: Ugh i feel so gross
First of all, Commack wedding center is awful and the people are nasty. I know a few brides on here have good things to say but, the majority of the reviews are bad. I live close to Commack to, but if you are willing to drive, go to Fantasia bridal in Rocky point. They are really nice there and will let you try on what ever you want. I have gone back about four times and they never push anything on me. (I can't find a dress I am really happy with) I get carded for lottery tickets, and I am 25. I used to get so annoyed but, the older I get, I start to appreciate it.

Wow...How they acted towards you was totally uncalled for. Definitely DO NOT let them get you down. For my sister's wedding we went to commack wedding center for BM dresses. They are all rude their!!! Bad customer service. There are so many other salons you can go to try on gowns and be treated like a queen. Gowns run really small. You can't go by what size you normally wear, they run totally different. On the age thing, take that as a compliment. People think all these different ages for me from 18 to 21 I am 31. So, let them think what they want. If you don't appreciate being called young now you will.

Re: Ugh i feel so gross
i feel your pain, i'm almost 30 and i'm told i look between 20 and 24. don't let one bad experience get you down, some companies need to look the words 'customer service' up in the dictionary. and i second lillettes in baldwin. my sister got her mori lee gown there and they were nothing but helpful when we had to order the bm's dresses. aside from one issue with the moh being preggo and the salon saying they 'had' to order $140 worth of 'Extra' fabric which was dealt with.
and don't feel fat or gross or Quasimodo-ish, you're not. those dresses aren't designed to fit any normal size woman. those sizes, who are they trying to kid? why can't a size 4, be a size 4? not a 10 or a 12, but a 4. and vise verse......oy, see what you started....

Re: Ugh i feel so gross
Thanks ladies - I know that CWC has a bad rep, but I really just wanted to get some ideas today. I went alone - didn't even bring anyone, so I really wasn't taking today seriously.
I really did like many of the Jim Hjelm and Bari Jay Bridesmaid dresses - many came in white and had what I was looking for: a small splash of color, little or no beading, and NO TRAIN! I'm gonna look online and see if I can find some of the BM dresses I'd love to wear as a wedding dress.
(just so you don't think I'm nutso, I am having a DESTINATION WEDDING!!! verrrry casual, but I still want a pretty dress. ) ALSO, It's very possible that FH and I will be moving the date up to the summer of 06, so I want to be prepared!!!!
eta: a gorgeous Jim Hjelm that looks sooo pretty on - I'd wear this color (ivory soft satin w/ pink organza sash) and my girls (there's only 2 BM and a MOH) will wear pink organza tea length dresses. So pretty!

Re: Ugh i feel so gross
Ugh! How horrible! Definitely don't give them any of your business!
It sounds like we are about the same size...I also wear a size 10 -12. I found lots of dresses at Lillette's that I could try on. The back didn't fit perfectly, but I was still able to see what it would look like on me. They also had at least one 18 so you can definitely see what the gown will look like when it comes in your size.
Good luck!

DO NOT LET ANYONE BRING YOU DOWN, THEY ARE JUST OBNOXIOUS WOMEN, I AM 25 AND PEOPLE EVEN SAID I LOOKED TOO YOUNG. DONT LET SOMEHTING LIKE THAT RUIN THE MOST IMPORTANT TIME OF YOUR LIFE. SCREW THEM.

Re: Ugh i feel so gross
I have heard nothing but bad things about them, and did not have a good experience myself their either. The woman just sat there talking to one of the other women while i stood there waiting to be helped. when she finally did help me, she looked like she was trying to get rid of me as fast as possible. Then I went to look at tiaras she walked away from me. They need to hire better people there because they must lose a lot of business. Sorry you went through that. My suggestion is to go somewhere else.

Re: Ugh i feel so gross
I've never heard anything good about that place so take the comments from where it comes from. I had a similar situation the first time I tried on dresses and went home in tears but it was more me being disappointed in my own appearance and the lack of professionalism of the girl who was helping me combined the other people were great. Have you tried Burtons? The can order you a bridesmaid dress pretty quick and might even be able to contact a distributor that has it in stock in your size. Carol was very helpful when I was looking however, I got nervous because I started to late, so I was afraid I wouldnt get it in time. Get some recommendations from the girls here to help, they were very helpful with ideas when I was looking too. Anyhow, sorry to ramble, hope you dont get discouraged and good luck

Re: Ugh i feel so gross
Sorry for your experience- I was planning on going there qith my mom and MOH- maybe I will go alone 1st to check it out...
Also- YOU HAVE ALOT OF TIME!! It is easy to feel rushed, but just remember that the suggested time to get your dress is 1 year before- even if it were summer 06, you still have alot of time!!
And if they treated you like that, forget them- there are alot of places that would love your business!
