Ugh i feel so gross

Original post by Shorty McBride

I went to look at some dresses today - just wanted to get an idea of what I look best in, AND I wanted to see some light/airy options because I am having a destination wedding.

I went to Commack Wedding Center (just to look) because I'm local, and let me tell you, what a bad experience. The women questioned my age (I'm 22, but look young) and said I was too young to get married . Then ANOTHER woman asked me if 'I was SURE I'm the bride' because I have no e-ring...THEN they told me that I'm the 'worst size to try on wedding dresses' because I'm toooooo big for the sz 10 samples and too small for the sz 20 samples.

I've never felt so fat. I'm never bigger than a 10 or 12 dress in real life, and I could barely zipper the ONE sz 16 dress they had!!!

Then I headed downstairs to the bridesmaid section (to look for a dress that comes in white), and I already know that i will be finding a bridesmaids dress in white instead of a 'wedding gown', because I like the simpler styles and there's more variety for a light/airy dress. The women down there weren't much better....

Very disappointed in my 'first dress search day' :(

I had a really bad experience at CWC also so don't feel bad. The lady literally told me as soon as I walked in 'We don't work on commission so we don't care which dress you choose' I should have known right then to turn around.

Go to someplace else and it'll be a totally different situation...I ended up going to Bridal Suite in Huntington that same day and the lady there was soooo nice. I went alone also b/c I was just trying to get some ideas.

Don't worry about not fitting into the bigger dresses. Everyone always says the dresses are made small.

I would def get something simple for a destination wedding...that way you'll still feel elegant but not over dressy.

Good Luck!!!!

I've heard about/had more bad experiences at the larger/chain stores. My advice is to go to a smaller bridal shop.

Try Bridal Suite of Centereach. I've worked with several of the ladies there (mainly Bev though) and only had one so-so experience. Everyone else (besides the one lady whose name i can't remember) is really really great!

My mom and bm's got their dresses there too, and had no complaints.

I've heard good things about other smaller shops too.

Good luck!

I had a bad start too...the first place I went to only had small samples. Those comments were totally ridiculous!!! Some places that I had great experiences at (nice salespeople) were Beautiful Bride (Lynbrook), Lillette's, and Patchogue Bridal Suite (where I ordered my dress). Trust me: the right salesperson will make any girl look like a princess in almost any size dress (I'm usually a 14 top, 12 bottom, and they pinned the samples in the back to give me a good idea of how I would look).

Thanks ladies - I know that CWC has a bad rep, but I really just wanted to get some ideas today. I went alone - didn't even bring anyone, so I really wasn't taking today seriously.

I really did like many of the Jim Hjelm and Bari Jay Bridesmaid dresses - many came in white and had what I was looking for: a small splash of color, little or no beading, and NO TRAIN! I'm gonna look online and see if I can find some of the BM dresses I'd love to wear as a wedding dress.

(just so you don't think I'm nutso, I am having a DESTINATION WEDDING!!! verrrry casual, but I still want a pretty dress. ) ALSO, It's very possible that FH and I will be moving the date up to the summer of 06, so I want to be prepared!!!!

eta: a gorgeous Jim Hjelm that looks sooo pretty on - I'd wear this color (ivory soft satin w/ pink organza sash) and my girls (there's only 2 BM and a MOH) will wear pink organza tea length dresses. So pretty!

I feel so bad for you and When I went to Estelles in Farmingdale I am normally a size 12 and the size 12's didn't fit me right. You should also try them for a dress they have alot o f dresses and they are very inexpensive. I went to Bridal Reflections in Massapequa cuz they carried the dress that I wanted and the dresses there. About the size of the dress don't feel like your fat cuz your not like I said I am a size 12 and they had to order me a size 16 cuz dresses do run small.

You can try Bridal Reflection in Massapequa or Carle Place I believe they carry Jim Hjelm I know that Lynbrook Bridals carry alot of his dresses. Try going on his website and see what stores carry his dresses that are close to you.

The Jim Hjelm dressi s beautiful!! I am sure whatever dress you choose you will look amazing in. Don't focus on the size of the dress. Instead focus on how you feel wearing it and how it looks. Good luck!!

i feel your pain, i'm almost 30 and i'm told i look between 20 and 24. don't let one bad experience get you down, some companies need to look the words 'customer service' up in the dictionary. and i second lillettes in baldwin. my sister got her mori lee gown there and they were nothing but helpful when we had to order the bm's dresses. aside from one issue with the moh being preggo and the salon saying they 'had' to order $140 worth of 'Extra' fabric which was dealt with.

and don't feel fat or gross or Quasimodo-ish, you're not. those dresses aren't designed to fit any normal size woman. those sizes, who are they trying to kid? why can't a size 4, be a size 4? not a 10 or a 12, but a 4. and vise verse......oy, see what you started....

AMEN!!!!!! You should write this to all Designers!

don't let that place get you down. they are oblivious over there. They have no manners.

I had a horrible experience there myself. one lady knew my aunt so she proceeded to tell all the women there my misfortune over the last 3 years with my family. The whole time I was there (with MOH) all they did was gossip about me.

honestly, i don't know how they stay in business.

cheer up
