UGH - Shoulder Injury (anyone have one?)

Just curious if anyone can offer any insight on this.

I have been taking Martial Arts for a few years now to work out. Well back in January of '03... I suffered a shoulder dislocation while I was sparring (fighting). Same type of injury Derek Jeter had last year.

My doctor told me it was a mild separation... and he didn't think it would require surgery to fix. But he did say if I ever dislocated it again... i would most likely need surgery. Well I was on the shelf back then for four months in therapy. Eventually went back to karate in May.

Well... last Wednesday while I was sparring again... I re-injured the arm. I didn't dislocate it (thank god)... but it got hit quite hard and it hurts. The shoulder 'cracks' practically whenever I move it. LOL

I am going to the doctor on Thursday to get it re-examined... but I am curious if anybody here either had this kind of injury... or knows somebody (a FH perhaps) that had this injury and maybe had the surgery too. Ever since the initial injury... my shoulder just hasn't been the same.

FW unfortunately really has no sympathy for me over this since she thinks I am being a 'baby' about this. She won't say it like that and she would probably say otherwise... but I know its how she feels deep down. She really has no clue what a shoulder separation is like (I wouldn't wish this on anyone).

I heard the surgery is a real pain in the a$$... 6+ months of rehab. One of the guys at my job had it done. I have my wedding in May... which is six months away so I have to take that into consideration. No way in hell I am going to be in a sling for my wedding.

I also am scheduled to take my black belt test this Saturday in Philadelphia (talk about crap timing). I injured it probably because I have been training REAL HARD for this test.

I am definitely taking this test even if my arm is half hanging out the socket (they only test for black belt twice a year and I am not waiting till May to re-test).

Re: UGH - Shoulder Injury (anyone have one?)

I have had pretty much every injury but shoulder, so I can't offer too much advice. But...if you need to go back to physical therapy in order to avoid surgery, I have a really great physical therapist. I had ankle and knee surgery a few months back and I was in really bad shape--painful just to take 2 steps. I'm in almost perfect condition again even though they had to also rehab me from the crappy job my old physical therapy place had done. Hope you feel better!!

Re: UGH - Shoulder Injury (anyone have one?)

My BIL dislocated his shoulder, and chipped the joint while the doc was relocating it. It did require surgery and BIL said that it took a long time to recover from it.... he did say 6 months - and with any bone injury, he's become a human barometer.

I would also like to point out that my BIL is not in the best of shape, so you could possibly bounce back quicker than the 6 mos.

Re: UGH - Shoulder Injury (anyone have one?)

Well even though I work out... i am not in as good of shape as i'd like to be.

When I dislocated my shoulder... there was somebody in the class that was actually able to put it back in the socket for me right away (don't ask me how he knew how to do this - he just did it). Beat the hell out of waiting hours to get to an emergency room to have it done.

I had a FM from somebody telling me I should see a chiropractor in addition to the orthopedist... which I am going to do this Thursday (gonna see both docs). I'll probably have to do physical therapy as well (blah).

Re: UGH - Shoulder Injury (anyone have one?)

My best friend's husband had shoulder surgery. His biceup had been off the shoulder and it just hung. He had it the week after our wedding and was in a sling until about a week ago. He is not allowed to lift heavy things and has to be really careful with it. He does go to therapy about 2-3 times a week too.

Re: UGH - Shoulder Injury (anyone have one?)

DH dislocated his shoulder in September, he was able to pop it back in the socket himself! He went for an MRI and they said he doesn't need surgery right now so he is currently in the process of working through a 16 week PT sessions.

Re: UGH - Shoulder Injury (anyone have one?)

I wouldn't wish a shoulder separation on my worst enemy.

My shoulder has just never been the same since the initial dislocation.

DH had a shoulder injury from a car accident that needed surgery a few years after it happened......had his rotator cuff done.
