Hi - sorry to flood the board with all my questions, but I need to educate myself on all these baby accessories!
Do most women have an extra smaller umbrella stroller? On which occasions would you prefer to use this rather than the larger, more complex strollers?
I've heard a common complaint is that some are too narrow, and that your child gets squished in the shoulders sitting in these as they get a bit older. Is there a better brand that makes them a bit wider than others to avoid this?
Thanks ladies!

Re: Umbrella strollers?
Hi Teri No problem with the questions...how else will you learn, if not from experienced Moms? Ask away anytime
I did not buy an umbrella stroller until just now - Paul is 22 months. They really aren't appropriate for a smaller baby, b/c they have to be able to sit up.
Umbrella strollers, IMO, are great for travel (which is what I bought it for) and very short spins around the store or neighborhood. They definitely are more narrow and have far less support than the larger strollers, so they really aren't as 'comfy' for the kids.
That said, I'd rather use an umbrella stroller at the airport, b/c for $16, I don't care if Southwest destroys it.
However - there are more 'suped up' versions of umbrella strollers on the market, which are still pretty reasonable in cost. Jeep makes one (I just saw in Toys R Us last week) that is wider and has a padded back rest for the kid - much nicer. ETA - it cost about $29.
Also, you might opt for a jogging stroller as an alternate, instead of an umbrella stroller....it depends on your lifestyle and how you think you'll use it.
And finally - if you're just looking for a smaller option while the baby is tiny, than using the entire travel system, you can always use the Snap-n-Go LX with just the infant seat. I LOVED that, and it was so easy.
HTH!

Re: Umbrella strollers?
thanks SO much for the info Claud!
Jenny - I think you're right - and for $30 or so, I'll pay for it myself when we're ready to use it. I don't want to worry about storing less expensive items we can easily pick up down the road

Re: Umbrella strollers?
teri it's true - so much of the stuff you just don't need. Like where are you going with a booster seat, ya know? You just DON'T NEED IT!
Or the exersaucer. If I put Sophie in that now she's be like - um hello do I look like I know what the eff to do with this?!?!?
So much of the stuff can be purchased later, and really it's hell to fill your house with this stuff. I am really enjoying that we get stuff as we need it, and it doesn't seem like my house turned into a daycare center overnight!
Just as I am ready to get a highchair..I'll ditch the bassinet. That kind of thing.

Funny you should bring this up, because I just got a gift from a friend (for the baby naming we had this weekend), and she gave me an umbrella stroller! It's made by Maclaren (spelling?), and I looked it up - it costs $149!!! It's really great, with tons of support for her back, so I guess you can get good ones out there! Now I feel the pressure to use it!!!!!!!

Re: Umbrella strollers?
we picked up the FREE ones they gave away at toysrus during one of their sepcials...now we have wo. Good to use in the summer ( we have ones that have a canopy...for very short trips...or to have in the back of the car for quick trips while shopping
as far as getting or avoid getting lots of stuff at once....I think Jenny mentioned getting rid of the bassinent and then getting the high chair- try not to dump anything. If you can store it, do that...and save it for #2...or to hand off to other ladies....
I was given a second hand excersaucer...and am soo glad it was 2nd hand...we used it and now stored away as compactly as poss...for #2 whenever we decide..

I'm not a mom so sorry to chime in. But my SIL has a McClaren and loves it. She's been using it since her baby was about a year old since she said it has really good support. And she said it was easier than lugging her big Peg Prego around.
