Unbelievable

Unbelievable

Well, my new bedroom furniture hadn't even been in the house for one month yet .. and now 2 of the 5 pieces have scratches in them!!

The inside of the footboard got scratched 2 days after the furniture came when the boxspring was delivered and put in place! (This didn't really bother me too much because you can't see it unless you're lying in bed).

Now, my dopey cat slipped off the dresser (which he shouldn't have been on to begin with) in the middle of the night and put a nice gash on the top surface, right at the corner ... about 2 inches long .. and this is really bugging me .. because it's so THERE!!! .. in your face.

So, it was off to Home Depot to buy some repair materials .. and no good .. neither the filler pencil or the marker worked .. it looks just as bad as ever .. and I did buy a variety of colors in an attempt to get the closest match.

Anyone have any suggestions??? Of course, I'm not foolish enough to think I can make it look brand new again, but I just want to conceal the harshness of it.

ok...how deep is the scratch? what color is the wood?

have you tried Murphys Oil...get either the light or dark - depending on your wood and it will soak into the scratch and if it is deep...the scratch will be there...but it will be cammoflouged (whoa that is spelled wrong...)...if its a light scratch it may blend in...

If you want to get really into it...you can sand it down...(I had to do this with my moms kitchen table when I was younger and had a party and some guests played quarters on it...tons of little nicks...and my mother still doesn't know 10+ years later)

lightly sand it until the scratch is 'flat' and then find a matching stain...i was lucky that my mom had a natural finish...so I just got a clear stain...

hope that helps...

You can call the store that you bought it from and ask for a contact for their refinisher. It will cost you a bit but its worth it to have it done by a pro.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking it's probably something that needs to be sanded .. but I have no guts to do something like that .. and I'm paranoid about calling someone in .. things just have a way of not going my way.

The scratch is a nice gouge into the surface, with two surface scratches next to it .. all thanks to three of his claws!

is it light or dark wood?

if it is light...I would do it myself (but thats just me)

dark is trickier...

Re: Unbelievable

It's dark - this picture makes it look lighter than it really is (at least the set we got)

Re: Unbelievable

and you say that you cannot find a stain that is close?

then maybe you would want to get a refinisher?

have you tried old English oil? (I said Murphys in my first post - but I meant Old English)

Re: Unbelievable

No, I haven't tried to stain it .. I bought the wood filler pencils and those repair markers .. and neither has been a good solution.

I'll try the Old English idea .. thanks!

(I wish I wasn't so paranoid to just have someone come in, sand it and stain it - I'm such a baby!)

Not a chance! Furniture can always be replaced .. my kitty can not!
