FH is in Local 3- Forest Electric.

He just got his 'A' card this week!!!! woooohooooo!!!!! after being an apprentice for over 5 years....he's finally out of the MIJ division!!

FH keeps telling me once your an A journeyman that you can be put on mandatory furlough (sp?) for up to 26 weeks a year I think......this is basically a temporary lay off and you get paid from unemployment and your 'B' fund.......has anyone had any experience with furlough? I'm just stressed b/c the last thing I need is him being laid off while we're trying to save!!!

FH has been telling me the same thing - he's still a 4th year apprentice so we still have about 2 years before he gets his A-card. Hopefully by then there will be more work so the furlough won't be that long. There's so many benefits to this Union but the only thing that isn't that great is the mandatory furlough...u still collect unemployment and B fund money but it's definitely not the same as your regular paycheck

I've heard of this before. I'm terrified its going to happen to us (They do this in Lacal 25 as well.) Also, in local 25, once you graduate from being an apprentice, if you aren't hired on as a foreman, you run the risk of being put at the bottom of the list to be hired as a journeyman.

Unions are great...but they also stink sometimes.

Wow….that really stinks!! I didn’t realize that Local 25 did that…I figured any chapter of IBEW would run things the same. How does Local 25 select who becomes a foreman?

Unions are great, but sometimes I really think its all who you know. Some people told my FH to join clubs or just volunteer for things so your involved and the union might take notice of you, my FH joined the softball team, which is at least something he likes doing but he also gets to know more guys outside of his shop.
