My sister did this at her wedding and the church did not provide it...so I went to Michaels...they have the traditional ones there...but that was not my sister's style, so I bought a big white pillar and 2 tapers...(I would have bought purple - her favorite color - but her MIL forbid me to do so )

I also bought a brass stand for the candle and 2 small ones for the tapers...and tied a purple ribbon around the big candle...

It seemed like you were telling her this is not for her, and I didnt think that was right. I also posted, she should check to make sure it was allowed, your post just seemed like you didnt think she SHOULD do it. Ya know? THat's the way Itook it, and I'm glad that's not the way you meant it.

The Unity Candle

The lighting of the unity candle symbolizes the merging of two lives into one. In some ceremonies the lighting of the unity candle will also incorporate the families of the bride and groom. There it symbolizes the joining together of two families, as well as the union of the couple, in a marriage. It marks the transfer of commitment from their families to the new commitment in establishing their own family in their life together.

Jodi- Good luck with whatever you decide to do, it is a beautiful part of the ceremony. We got many complements from our guests for including it in our mass.
The lenox unity candle is also the one we chose, and it was beautiful. But we used fancier candles than the ones it came with. Also, if you have time or energy you can go to the American Candle Factory in Pennsylvania- near the Crossings outlets. They have a TON of unity candles. We used ones with Swarovski Crystals- they also have this at Fortunoff's which I saw after I bought them in PA.

Anyone can use the unity candle ceremony. It is not part of traditional Christian or Jewish ceremonies. It is a fairly recent addition to ceremonies with unclear origins and some Catholic churches actually refuse to use it because it may have some pagan origins. That being said, it is a beautiful moment. I always like to see it and will probably do it. Use it if you like it and your officiant agrees.

WE are havinag an interfaith ceremony, and our program will hopefully explain to everyone what we are doing. Heres the excerpt about the unity candle

The two outside candles lit by MOB and MOG represent the individual lives of Bride and Groom to this moment. These distinct flames, each burning alone, represent the faith, wisdom and love received from their parents

Together, Bride and Groom light a center candle, symbolizing the union of their lives. Their thoughts shall be for each other, and they will share both joys and sorrows. The flames of the two smaller candles remain lit to show how although they are now one, they are still each unique individuals.

I ordered mine from Chandlers Candle

We got the Queen Anne Pink (our flowers will be pink and ivory, so that matched the best) and they turned out really well! I love it, and can't wait to display it in the house after the wedding!

If you like the lenox unity candle (shown on this post) go to ebay. I just received mine in the mail and it's beautiful. I paid $20.50 + like $8.00 shipping (in the lenox catalog it is $45 ). It doesn't come engraved though, you would have to go somewhere to get that done
